i believe its there to protect the arch edge from stone chips, but whilst doing that they become crud catchers

Sounds like the wheel arch protectors to me too. They tend to get water build up inside of the rubber which causes them to come away from the arch. You can faff with them to to make them fit/look better, but I replaced the lot and they look a lot better.

hair drier wont help its the steel spring inside the rubber strip that has rotted. |
