just as well as 20's

The biggest thing in snow is the tread is deep and sharp..so most tyres "when new" will perform well...

Ice..well 2.5 tonnes of car will always prefer to go straight on ice whatever you have on!!

what tyres are on it? RRS gone
Audi SQ5...Gone Audi Q7 S-Line 240 3.0TDI Gone
Audi A6 Allroad Sport 270 3.0TDI

No tyres will perform well on ice unless they are studded which are illegal on our roads Whistle 22's will perform in snow but not as well as smaller diameter wheels with winter tyres on. Is it worth the risk damaging your 22" rims sliding into a kerb Big Cry

I was just reading this week's Autocar ref winter tyres, and I quote:

"Winter tyres address the two big problems that summer tyres have in cold weather - rubber's inability to grip snow or ice, and the hardness of of the rubber at low temperatures. To counter this, winter tyres are made of a softer rubber compound that stay more flexible in icy weather, and the tread psttern is covered with tiny slits called sipes. These exploit the fact that snow grips snow better than rubber grips snow. The sipes fill with snow and retain it as the tyre rotates, using it to grip the snowy road as it comes back into contact with it. That's why in in winter, decent snowe tyres look like they're clogged with snow..."

I didn't realise that!

22 inch or whatever, it all depends on the width of the type. The wider the tyre the worse its performance. Wide tires act like ski. Rule N1 when driving in snow, small tyre, the thiner the better. Vadim A.

Simple: summer tyres on the 22s and it'll struggle. Not so much in traction because it's 4x4 (although it'll still struggle a little) but in stopping and cornering. 4wd doesn't help in braking or cornering. Lots of people forget that and the number of 4x4 in hedges in winter is evidence of that.

winter tyres on 22s and it'll be reasonably ok. Traction, braking and cornering will be improved.

And winter tyres will help on ice. Sipes help grip on ice because it's biting edges that helps there. Sipes give lots of biting edges. Not as good as studded tyres, obviously, but better than any summer tyre can ever manage.

Summer tyres in winter? What do you expect? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

So for winter road use (particularly with snow) which tyres to go for?

Vredestein Wintracs, General Grabbers, Conti x-contacts (LR recommended....) Pirelli scorpion ice and snow??? Rolling Eyes Confused

Any advice on this, and also on optimum 20" tyre sizes very gratefully received!

I am using Hankook Ventus, widely regarded as the best all round tyre for the money, they are Mud & Snow rated

Many thanks for the feedback, Vredesteins do seem popular.

I have Vredestein Wintrac Extreme's on 19" wheels. The 20" shod with Conti's are for summer use. '10 Range Rover Sport TDV8

Vred Wintracs on 19s here. 20s with Goodyears for summer use. But only because the 20s came with the car and had the Goodyears on them. Will probably look for something else when they're due to be changed. Might even stick with 19s and sell the 20s... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The ride is certainly better with the 19"! Can't imagine what it would be like on 22" other than despicable. '10 Range Rover Sport TDV8
