Service frequency conundrum

Here's an interesting twist.

Bought my current RRS back in October 2010, an ex-Land Rover car. The service records said it had been serviced at 14,450 miles two months earleir in August (almost exactly to the day). In that 2 month gap the mileage had risen by only 8 miles! Consequently I asked the dealer to reset the service indicator when they're workshop did the LR used car pre-sale checks.

A few days ago the message centre says "Service Required" i.e. 12 months from August.

Now the 2010MY RRS is supposed to require services at 16,000 miles, mine has now done 22500 miles and will 2 years old in Sept. so only about 8,000 since the service.

This all actually means that unless you do more than 16,000 miles per year you'll always be servicing on a 12 month schedule somewhat negating the principles of synthetic oils. high capacity filers etc all kit used and fitted to extend service intervals.

LR rely on their statement, see website or service booklet e.g. 16,000 OR 12 months whichever is first.

i doubt there are many manufacturers that dont request yearly intervals, one could argue that a car stuck in the garage all year would need more of a service than one doing 15000. i think there would be a clause in the warranty about this as well.
i suppose it means garages can guarentee 4/500 quid out of you each year!!
cheers
