Petrol vs Diesel

I'm looking at buying a 2007 RRS, either TDV8 3.6 or 4.2 SC with about 40-50k on the clock. The question is which to go for? Diesels are about £35k, petrols around £10k less. That buys a HUGE amount of extra fuel even working on 10MPG difference between the two, plus the petrol must be more fun?

We'll be using it around wales, almost all country driving with the odd long trip thrown in. Not too worried about resale as the plan is to keep it long term. What do people think?

Thanks Randal

"10k is a HUGE amount of fuel"
"Not too worried about re-sale"
"Petrol must be more fun?"

Sounds like you've already made your mind up Thumbs Up

Real money it's 460 miles on £110 worth V's 260 for the SC

Average person does 1300 miles a month? that's 3 fill up's for the TDV8 and 5 for the SC. so an extra £220 a month on fuel. RRS gone

How do you get 460 miles out of £110 worth of fuel Question
Have you been on the back of a recovery truck Question Laughing

I was in the same predicament when I was looking, the appeal of the initial saving on the S/C nearly got the better of me! I opted for the TDV8 in the end, an epic motor and just a shade slower, but should I need to shift it I wont be bent over!

Another reason that put me off was the trips to the garage, I had an E60 M5 a few years ago and was there 3 times a week sometimes! The jokes with the petrol attendants wore thin after a few months and I dont want to go back down that road again Big Cry

I live in Wales and test drove both at length, real world "fun" driving -

TDV8 - 20mpg
S/C - 11mpg

You make your choice you pays the price!

I'm learning that a short blast up to cruising speed then backing off the throttle and just keeping it "on the boil" keeps me at 26.4mpg Mr. Green

Motorway blast up to Worcs at 80mph returned 28mpg (total distance 200 miles with around 20 of that being A and B road stuff, the rest motorway)

keeping away from c/c too. RRS gone

Thats amazing Shocked

If I really try, and I mean using the manual gears, I can get 24mpg round here but that is HARD! I'd rather 20mpg and just forget about it, less headache Very Happy

On a run though I have achieved 32mpg which shocked me Shocked

yep..biggest fuel munchers are cruise and command shift

leave it in D and let it work it out... then again mine's mapped so might have a wee bit more torque mid range helping the mpg?

mine was 31 just before a "spirited" blast up Birdlip... then it dropped to 28 Mr. Green RRS gone

Mine's mapped as well Very Happy

I found manual to be a god send on the B roads round here, I was getting around 17mpg when I first got it and was scratching my head as to why Neutral

I realised after a while that I needed to be going over 60mph to get the auto box to throw it in to 6th gear so started manually shifting it across at 50mph, thus getting the return to over 20mpg Thumbs Up

Sounds like you need to get the gearbox module software updated. Mine changes into top at 50mph.

(I know this because my commute involves a 50mph road, and if I'm following someone at 48 it'll sit in 5th at 1,500rpms, but if i can "persuade" them to get to 50 then it changes up) Laughing RRS gone

Yeah

I noticed that after the last service mine changes in to top lot earlier

Still only gets low twenties

I seriously considered a supercharger at the time (at that time it was 10p a litre different)

till I found out the real world consumption of the S/C

Friend of mine changed his full fat S/C for a TDV8 full fat because he was sick of filling it up

and he is definitely not short of a bob or two

cheers Kiel
