I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice on the the Nikon Digital SLR 5100.

I am looking to get it as a present and wondered what's you thoughts on it? If any one has used it, any idea of what the best lens is to get?

Many thanks, I have no ideas about cameras, but want to try and get a decent one.

Not a Nikon, but I've got a Canon 450D, it's a superb DSLR!

There's nothing that can cripple it and as it is a precious model good deals can be had!!

I used to be a photographer for a living and have used digital kit for years. My first digital camera was a Sony Mavica that recorded the pictures onto floppy disks that were inserted in the side of the camera lol.

I have used a lot of DSLR's and I like cannon kit the best of all. Nikon is ok but Cannon spanks the arse off them all in my opinion. 2017 Range Rover Sport Autobiography

If you can, go to a shop and try the ones that interest you. How the camera feels in you hands will decide which one suits you best. There is little difference between different makes with the same specs, but the one that feels right will be the one you'll tend to use most often.

The D5100 is a great camera and certainly up to the quality of Canon.

Lens choice is personal. The 'kit' lenses tend to be a bit of a compromise and much depends on your intertests - landscape/ sport/ portrait etc. FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

Nikon 5100 is good, to be honest all the starter DSLR's are quite comparable, the real difference comes from handling them and how they feel in your hands With these entry level models a lot of the controls are buried within the menu system so you get a neater looking camera (less buttons) but the downside being that the instant control is a little lacking.

Having just changed from a Sony DSLR to a Nikon D7000 I can give a big to the Nikon kit, I sold my old SLR with 4 different lenses and now just use the kit lens (18-105mm) and a 50mm f1.8 lens. Beware with the 5100 as I believe that it doesn't have an autofocus motor in the camera body so some of the older (cheaper) lenses will only work as manual focus. I think the same is true of the Canon entry level models also.

Nikon 5100 is a good camera to start with, if you can get the 18-105 kit lens this is better as the lens is sharp throughout the focus range and retains good clarity even with the aperture stopped right down or wide open. In all a good general purpose lens.
If you can get a 50mm f1.8 lens as well then this is great for lower light level shooting as you can open the aperture up 2 stops over the kit lenses (f1.8 vs f3.5) and for portraits the shallow depth of field is very pleasing. No zoom either which makes you think more about composition etc

i asked around a few months back and ended up getting myself a cannon 600d body only and a couple of lenses a 18-55 & 55-200, excellent bit of kit and easy to use whilst your learning.

Pal of mine is a pro he is now carrying a Sony A55 in his kit bags with a new translucent mirror whatever that is ? tells me that he thinks they will all go that was in time , showed me some pics and video got to say stunning results , only thing that shocked me was his lense prices holy , he has one on the A55 that is £3000 FFS , but took some pics with a 200mm kit one and that was damn good. He has Canon and Nikon bodies that are also in his ally cases. His thoughts were its all about what you want it for and how much you want to spend ! 2014 5.0SC AB
