TOW load help please...

Ok...
A friend of mine has built a a rack that can fit on a a tow bar using the four screw hole system you find on the height adjustable tow bar.
The specs on the rangerover sight say:

Multi-Height Tow Bar Part No: LR005740

Offers three different towing height options. Lowest tow ball height 350mm from ground. Highest tow ball height 450mm from ground. 3,500kg trailer load capacity (150kg trailer nose load). Not compatible with Exterior Design Pack 2010 Model Year vehicles onwards or Stormer Accessories Pack 2005-2009 Model Year.
.

My bike weighs 206kg and the rack weighs about 30kg...

Do you think I could risk still using the rack ?

Weight wise it would be fine if you imagine a trailer nose weight of 150kg plus a boot full of luggage, its the fact that the weight of the bike will be that much further back due to the bumper etc which makes it a bit more of an engineering challenge. 08 2.7 RRS "S"

We used to carry 2 trial bikes on a FFRR, but towbar wasn't a swan neck version.

If the rack fits firmly and rigidly to the car I doubt there'd be any problem. You'll need a light board etc. Just watch out with the bikes handlebar and the tailgate when you load up.

What is the max hitch load if using the Australian type hitch? I had in my mind that it was a good 100kg more than our puny EU loads?

Ive had 5 people plus 4 suit cases in my RRS before... surely 230kg and me only would be fine...

back :3 people at 70kg each : 210
front : 2 people at 70kg : 140
4 cases at 20kg each : 80kg

430kg...

Surely the bike should be okay?

It would make life so much easier... Vans are just so uncomfortable to travel 400 miles in...

flight,

I have used a MO-TOW aluminium rack similar to yours on many occasions on both my previous RRS and my current D4. This has been inserted into the standard tow bar hitch but mostly into the Mitchell hitch. I have only carried a Yamaha WR450 which would weigh considerably less than your planned load, but, without excessive load in the back of the car, I am confident the car is capable of carrying your package. The air suspension is self adjusting for load which is a big bonus.

hope this helps.....frank my10D4se3Ltdv6 current

Im leaning towards its ok.

But to answer your question - its where the load is and what its on, not the load - the weight you mention is all in the car - a caravan/trailer there is a max 3.5ton pulling force and the noise weight is lower as the main weight is on the wheels of the trailer not acting straight down on the hitch Mike

Would probably be ok but i do have reservations due to the location of the load. Another thing to consider is should anything go wrong due to the extra load, would your insurance cover any third party claim.

I don't know to be honest it's just that insurance companies will do anything to avoid paying out large claims, and overloading the tow bar by over 50% gives them a possible out.

Sorry I should have said any claim you had not a third party claim.

You obviously have some doubts yourself or you would not be asking in the first place, so if you think something could go wrong or break isn't that a potential accident situation?

If you check page 193 of your RRS manual Land Rover say the maximum tow bar load is 250kg, which is plenty; in Aussie it can be 350kg.

But if the car is full then this would need to reduce as you risk exceeding the rear axle weight limit e.g. if car at maximum weight the max load for the tow ball is 150 kg which is still OK for you.
