Faulty headlamp

HSE 2.6 diesol 2006.

The left headlamp has stopped doing its setup adjustment when it is switched on, it is now pointing down at the road about 5 yards in front of the car. The right headlamp is working normally.

The dealer looked at it today, and confirmed that it is moving from side to side, but not up and down so it's always looking down. They say that a new headlamp is needed. I couldn't believe it when I was told that a new headlamp is £700.

Isn't it possible to service the module that does the adjusting? It's just a couple of servo motors isn't it? There must be a cheaper alternative to £700, especially as the headlamp still basically works.

Btw, I am aware of the high voltages involved, and the need for care with, these headlamps.

Thanks for any advice.

My left light does exactly the same but only intermittently. Turn the ignition off and back on and its ok. There may be a leveling sensor that is faulty. Who makes the units Hella? May be worth contacting the technical department of the manufacturer they may be able to advise
