Just going through the process of getting the car ready for our big trip through the Kimberley only to discover that both front bearings and the rear passenger side are shot.

Interestingly I also discovered that you can't just replace the bearings on the front and actually have to replace the entire hub.

Waiting on the parts quote but am not expecting too much joy there.

Anyone else had to do their wheel bearings as yet?

I suspect that there may have been a few hundred too many dunkings in rivers and mudholes running on very hot bearings over the last 80,000kms. 'Black Betty' Java Black RRS 07 TDV6

JS, not heard of this before, and most i hear at the 80K mark is typically the control arm bushes are usually shot and need replacing.. that happened on my last one

How are you determining that the wheel bearings are shot?

If they are the same like the Disco II wheel bearings (sealed for life Timken bearings) then they are really quite durable and have been very much troublefree despite being subjected to punishing offroad condtions. My wheel bearings have crossed the Simpson Desert twice, submerged in countless bog holes and still are OK.

But be warned - like any wheel bearing, they cannot handle a big side swipe. I've killed one rear wheel bearing that way.

I think the test is to jack up a wheel and then shake the wheel from side to side and do the same top and bottom. If there's significant play, maybe they are stuffed. 1999 Discovery II V8 auto

I've just had the passenger side rear replaced, nearly 2 days of swearing and heating for my indy to get the hub carrier off. Both fronts are beginning to grumble under braking but they're a much easier fix, £120 for a complete unit is a damn sight cheaper than the £350 it used to cost for my P38... Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE.
