There is a sensor at the top of the windscreen and when the light entering the sensor is modified by a rain drop it activates the wipers. Of course the sensor cannot tell the difference between a rain drop or something else that interrupts the light. I have major problems with bugs and locusts getting splattered in the screen - sometimes maybe a flying leaf.
