Been lurking for a good while now so thought I would actually post a question.

The last car I owned was an E46 M3 but as I am currently engaged in a self build barn conversion, am currently running round in a van

Anyway we've been at it two years and it's now nearly finished I am now looking at new cars and at the moment it's a toss up between the RRS and the new Audi RS4. I know they are completely different animals and I haven't ruled out the possibility of buying the RRS for the wife and having the Audi myself.

I am trying my hardest to convince the wife that this is a good idea but as yet she remains decidedly unsure.

Test drives don't really do it for either of us and I've made some expensive mistakes in the past having bought cars after a relatively short test drive.

My question is this: Is it possible to have the RRS for an extended test drive (say a weekend) or even hire one from a dealership? I am sure if I could get her into one for a couple of days she would like it and I could then 'own' both vehicles and have the best of both worlds.

Any advice?

We tried, but all we could get out of our dealer was a 10 min test drive...but that was a year ago when the first came out and basically they were selling themselves so the dealers weren't too interested in trying too hard to sell them. Matt

RRS ownership for 1 yr, then D3 for 2 yrs. Then cut back to old bangers and working my way back up through two Peugeots in 6 months. Now got Saab 9-5 2.3t and enjoying the performance!

Express an interest in buying to an LR dealer and ask to go on the new "clinch the deal" test drive at a Land Rover Experience - the best way may be to go through the Land Rover GB website www.landrover.co.uk and ask for the info through that rather than risk the brush off from a dealer (it's them that pay for LRE days!).

You can also book full day LRE days as a private individual (they are not cheap but well worth it just to see what the car can do) and explain to them that you are treating it as a test drive (and trying to persuade Mrs D that she should like the car), ask to go on the road as well as off the road. You would also have to tell them that it is the RRS that you are interested in otherwise you might end up in a Freelander or a Defender!

We test drove RRS in early Feb and then the best we could get was an accompanied test drive but it was for 1/2 hr and a full tour round the vehicle explaining how everything worked.

I think the best thing to do is probably what Tim suggested but alternatively is approach your local dealer and press for it. Explain that you are stuck between a RRS and maybe a new ML or other prestige 4x4 and that the Merc garage let you take one for a 24hr test drive.

If you're able/prepared to do it mid-week you will stand a better chance. Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award

Thanks chaps. The LRE day sounds like good fun for me but I'm not sure Mrs Brown would be quite so keen.

The problem with acompanied test drives is that she is so nervous that there is someone else in the vehicle ( a stranger and usually a man) that she doesn't really get to experience what it's like to drive the car. She spends her time worrying about what they think to her driving.

I don't have that problem but a test drive of half an hour is too short a time in which to decide whether to buy a £50k+ vehicle.

After a few days of driving something then you really know whether it suits.

I suppose I'll have to seek out a prestige hire company that keeps an RRS.

Called in to Guy Salmon (Leeds) to see what they thought. Problem solved. Going in early next month when I can take their new demonstrator from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon which isn't at all bad.

The RRS and the RS4..
I have just sold my RRS in anticipation for my RS4 delivery next month..
Would loved to have kept the RRS on and pick up the RS4.. but currently my projects etc won't allow enough cashflow to keep both going at the same time.. maybe something for the future though..

We discussed this before in older posts, and if you had choice of two cars for a dream driveway what would they be..? most people said a combination of a super saloon M5/RS4 etc.. and an RRS 4.2 SC/Diesel.. you get to have that dream right now.. fair played.. good luck persuading the wife..
and have fun on you're test drive.

I don't have any problem taking cars with salesmen sitting next to me.. if im spending £50k on a motor, i will drive it to the limit (where possible) to see what my £50k is getting me.. i had real fun in the RS4 and to be fair the salesmen did too.. im fortunately not too much of a nut, i know my limits, but he did say the job carries a lot of risk when getting in the car with strangers when test driving RS6+'s and RS4's etc.. can imagine its not nice sometimes..
