What is the cars mileage? At first guess i would suspect alternator or one of the belts are slack or worn.

98,000 miles sir. No electrical power issues, not running in low power mode or anything. . . |

Along with alternator or belt, check the belt tensioners too, upper and lower, the bearing in the lower one tends to take more of a hammering, and can fail at that mileage. RRS TDV8 Buck Blue (no, not now in my dreams). ..........D3 TDclankety clankV6 ............BMW 318i |

Can you identify if it coming from the back or front of the engine? Its almost due for its belts changing anyway |

I think the whine is coming from the front, just started up to check and got a whiff of something like brake linings, saying that I don't make a habit of sniffing under the bonnet on startup!
