Modifications and Insurance

We have often had questions posted about fitting bigger/wider wheels and other body and enigine chips mods, while checking out competitive insurance I came across this definition on Direct Line's policy. For an insurance company its pretty clear...

"Modifications to your car
You must tell us what modifications you intend to make and obtain our agreement PRIOR to making them. Modifications are changes to your car's standard specification, including optional extras. These include but are not restricted to, changes to the appearance and/or the performance of your car (including wheels, suspension, bodywork and engine).

If you do not tell us about any relevant modifications we may
- reject or reduce your claim
treat the policy as void (i.e. as though it has never existed)." Direct Line 2011.

The also say the modification to a 'standard' car by say a previous owner(s) must also be notified in advance.

Each theif (sorry insurance company) is different and you should always read your small print - especially the company not the broker.

From experience ive been told (in writing) that items out of the accessory book from LR do not require seperate notification (although i often have) where as items that are not included do.

We need to remember insurance companies work for us...so i dont contact them to seek permision, if they dont like it - ill take my business elsewhere Mike
