My RRS SC has 20" rims and low profile tires. It's been very tempting to take the car into the sand just to see how well it goes but I am rather hesitant because of the need to deflate the tires and get a better foot print.

Has any of members driven their RRS in the sand and what tires, pressures etc did you use?

My Discovery is shod with 265/75 R 16's so I would normally drop them down to 16 psi for continued soft sand driving. I fear that dropping the pressures on my 20" wheels will allow sand into the bead or even run the risk of damaging the rims.

I've seen magazine shots of the RRS in Dubai belting up and down the sand dunes but it never mentions what steps they'd taken with the tires. The Sport has bags of power to get through the soft stuff but traction still needs to be maintained to keep going.

Any advice welcome.

I've no experience on sand, but I'd have thought you're "footprint" on the 20's is slightly larger then on 18" anyway..and the tyre walls are stiffer,so reducing tyre pressure will have little benefit.

Just get out there and give it some welly... as long as there are no rocks of course  RRS gone

I've got next to no off road experience but I've take. My sport onto local beaches frequently and it has no problem whatsoever working it's way through the sand.

I have 20" wheels on my S/C with 255/65R16 tyres. Drove on to the beach last weekend on to stones (a bit deeper than I expected) had to go to extended height mode as I was sinking the spare wheel under the car was dragging but it just kept going pulled like a train didn't change tyre pressures or to the sand mode!

Best 4x4 by far I think is an under statment!!  Cheers Laurence.

I took mine into the desert by Big red with the 20" rims and let the air out to 11 psi... no worries with the tyres but to be honest on soft sand in the dunes the RRS was rubbish; its way too heavy and the high perf road tyres are useless. Also watch the front & rear bumpers, they'll get trashed!

I was going to get some sand tyres such as the Nitto Dune Grapplers.. they may improve things.

thx for the pointer. For usual dune driving I use the Discovery but wanted a gentle run out in the RRS just to see how it copes. We ended up going to the choppy stuff by RAK airport for a campout this weekend & I took my Disco instead coz it's got all the gear in it already.

Driving a beach and driving the dunes can not be compared in all fairness.....but hats off to the guys who've ventured off of the pavement and passed comment anyways

Surly you'd have to down size the rims to get any size of decent off road tire under the arches? My friend runs the Nitto Dune Grapplers on his GMC Silverado with very good results!

the 19" MT/R worked well in the sand dunes in Holland a couple of years ago, much better than some of the Defenders were doing  Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

I have had my SC off road in Oman only on construction sites and a bit of beach driving with no problems. So no real experience.

However, I run 285/50R20 tyres, currently Goodyear GT IIs but trying to source Cooper Zeon LTZ

I deflated once on the beach, but, really there was no need as it wasn't the really soft stuff you sometimes find, did have it in Sand mode mind, which controls the power flawlessy.

On the sites I run standard 42psi, however the ground there is either gravel/ small rocks or very soft sand but usually no more than 15cm deep onto a solid surface, which the RSS' just ploughs through... 2006 RRS S/C CONSTANTLY under modification...
