I was in same shoes as you a month ago, i went and bought rrs 4.2 s/c on 55 plate in almost showroom condition inside and out with 50k miles on clock and full serive hystory, perf light leather int, i get 16-17 mpg driving hmm like a grany or sunday driver...or some people consider as normal maybe, not reving higher then 2000 rpm if helps, but from my exp its plenty fast for every day driving in tht car, it certainly got enough power and pull for a 4x4, and perfomance is there, its probobly as quick as golf gti mk5, correct tyre presure makes a difference on your mpg, surely you can buy private for 20-22k in todays climate, thought i share my short expirience.....
Ps am over the moon with my rrs
But if you buy your self a petrol station would be a move forward
