Contact your finance company for a Settlement Figure.

Should I contact a garage to sell it rather than a private sale though? I have my settlement figure and it doesn't look likely that I will break even - husband usually deals with these things but he is ill and thats why we need to sell asap. The thought of going to a garage and dealing with salesmen terrifies me! |

Try to sell it privately first. I have bought a few cars with existing finance and its relatively simple to sort out. Many private buyers are not put off with a car owing finance.....

There is a clause with some agreements that when you reach half way in your agreement you can legally hand the car back and walk away |

Yep, Chris is correct. If you bought the car on a "Hire Purchase Agreement", once you have paid 50% of the finance you can just hand the car back to the finance company and walk away. Obviously if you think you are in a negative equity position with the car then this can be a good option. I would also check the mileage of the car is not above the quoted figure in the HP Agreement as you may then be liable for some additional payments. I am not sure what, if any, effect just handing the car back will have on your credit score. Maybe someone else on the forum has more expertise on that issue and can advise.

Should have no effect, a guy who used to work for me did this all the time but i do beleive there is a maximum value of the HP, i may be in correct but the figure of £24K springs to mind, KAM may be able to help.

There are 2 types regulated and non regulated,I tried it with my MB but I had the wrong one, also I understand if you do walk away it will show as a bad mark on your credit rating so only do it as a very last resort. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.

Thanks to you all for responding to my post - truly has been a great help to read over all the info you guys have provided. You will all be shaking your head when you read this next part! How do I know the spec!?! I know it is java black, 22 inch alloys, cream leather, touch screen sat nav, plug in your ipod thingy, chrome on the top of the wing mirrors, heated front and rear seats, step to get in(i'm wee!) and it has privacy glass at the back seats and back window - is that all I mention to garages or if I put it on as a private sale - I know you will be shouting at the screen! |

You should do what all the LR dealers do,advertise it at 49K miles and put the readout onto trip and hope you get away with it,if anyone notices just say it was a mistake. MY2011 HSE Santorini/Ivory/Piano Black/Privacy Glass/TV .Sadly gone.
