Sorry if this has been asked before (2 questions) - i couldnt find any record...

Is there a period you should "drive in" the new engine? I cant seem to find any reference, so im assuming not. Ive tried to keep restrained in the first 300 miles (its only done 500 now) but in part me getting used to the auto and in part me getting impatient sometimes, when you need to go, you need to go - it does seem to rev high (ok higher than previous Land Rovers and other "normal cars).

So the question is there a period to be gentle with the engine and what is gentle.

Second and final questions Yawn I hear mixed things about how you should "use" the diesel. In the old V8 it was POWER, in the discover i took it easy - defender was a mix. 1 mate swears blind drive it easy and the other that diesels need to be "worked"
Which is is...answers on a postcard!

(i know they are 2 sad questions) Mike

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

IIRC LR advises in the owners' manual that there is no "running-in" period but for the first 600-1000 miles to avoid high revs (exceeding 3000 RPM) and to avoid allowing the engine to be in a high gear at low revs (as it's an auto really the only way you can do this is to be in "command-shift" and even then it will shift if it doesn't like it). Seeing as 70 is about 2100RPMs then one long trip on the motorway (eg London to Newcastle and back) would achieve that. Also check you oil level carefully, in the first 3-4 weeks the engine block in a new TDv6 can absorb quite a bit of engine oil (LR reckons 1 litre in the first 600-800 miles is normal) and then (in my exeprience of "running in" 2 TDV engines) it will not use any more. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thanks

I have noticed its used some oil (about a 1/4)...ill go and top it up tomorrow. (i think they dont put that much oil in from new to save money!)

Like you say on limiting higher revs, the only way to stop it is to command shift out - which ive done, but not every time (despite having flappy paddles Rolling Eyes )

Judging by what you say im sure the odd blip past 3000 wont hurt - but ill avoid it a little more for another few 100 miles.

Thanks for the advice...off to buy some oil that meets the right spec Whistle Mike
