Steering wheel center pad lifting

Having just recently purchased my 2008 RRS SC in Alpine white I thought I'd pop round to my mate to show him my new car. He also has a 2008 model SC in black.
The first thing he said to me was " I see the center pad on your steering wheel is also beginning to curl upwards".
It wasn't something I'd previously noticed but once he'd bought it to my attention I thought "what a bummer" I wonder if this is common?
Obviously the cars here in the middle east are exposed to alot of harmfull UV rays and very bright sunshine...but has anyone else had this happen to their steering wheel center pads?

I know that the Discovery 300's also had a similar problem with the famous 'curling dashboard' syndrome.

I think an easy fix would be to remove the center pad and apply some heat to the reverse side with a heat gun or hairdryer.

Thoughts/comments?

Thx guys.

I've never heard of this in the UK. I wonder if it's down to the extreme heat that develops in the cabin of the car when it's parked in places like the UAE rather than UV levels. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

Yes..it gets very hot inside the car if it's left standing for a few hours. I have 30% 3M window tint film which cuts down the UV entering the cabin..but even so the heat of the black leather makes you jump somewhat when you get in.

Just wondered if anyone else has had this? It's happened to mine and my mates cars. Big Cry

If you still have any warranty left then take it into the dealership and get it replaced under warranty - I don't know if Middle East cars got 1 or 3 years warranty. I suffered the smilling dash on a Disco1 V8 ESi too, even at 5 years old the local dealer replaced it as it wasn't just a warranty job but also subject to a TSB which was great for my pocket! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Streaky, i've got the same problem.

Good that you've started this link, because i was about to do it myself.

At the end, i think the only solution is to remove the airbag, and to glue the top curled part back to its base. SW

TSB LTB00203v2 issued in 2009 concerns "Driver Air Bag Module Distorted".

The driver Air bag Module lifts up at the top edge and this is considered a cosmetic issue.
The cause is " Expansion co-efficient difference between the two layers of material that form the cover".

Point the dealer to this TSB. Smile Malaysia Boleh!

Wow 5 years warranty............................. we dream of that back here where they are built! Vauxhall have just announced "lifetime" warranties here but in fact they consider the "lifetime" of the car to be 10 years and the car must be serviced at a Vauxhall dealer. It's taken a long time for the others to copy Volvo - I had a 480ES in 1988 that had a Lifetime warranty! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Bobby,

Please could you post the whole TSB LTB00203v2 so i can print it out.
This is because things are different here in Spain, and they have never heard about TSB's.

With this TSB, the dealer HAS to repair the module?

Thanks SW

Again Bobby you are the best!

By the way, with this TSB in my hand, the dealer is obliged to repair this defect, or they have the right to say no?

(Also, at the 2 main dealers in Barcelona Spain, they never heard about the suspension knock problems on the RRS (NO NO RRS IS FERY FERY GOD CAR!!) and so also not about the TSB's about this subject.) SW

Laughing Laughing

I don't know how things work in Spain (except the rain in Spain...) but I would guess they cannot refuse!

This is an official TSB from LR acknowledging and telling all dealers worldwide of this defect and instructing them what to do! Wink Malaysia Boleh!

Hmmm, might have to try that TSB on my dealer, see what they say. Mine's lifting quite badly, I'd just expected them to say TADTS... Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but i'm in Barcelona as well and the airbag on my RRS is curling up badly... I bought the car second hand and it's not under warranty, have you had any chance getting exchanged by a dealer in Barcelona using that TSB?

Thanks
