whilst that may not be the case the pickup is vastly improved...assumes the timing was exactly set up at initial build

Well, because of stretch in the cam belt this can alter performance (ever so slightly) due to the change in cam timing.
With long intervals between cam belt changes,improvements to response can be detected when new belts are fitted.
