Just got a nice nail through the side of the tyre wall, there 22"s so continentals arnt cheap! my local tyre man is telling me i must replace both sides or il mess up the tracking? is he talking a load of ??

i was told the same, but mine was well worn one side, and would have been new the other, so i did change both

he said something about there been 'x' mm difference in tread its advisable to swap both

Might have to bite the bullet on this one, then contact forum sponsor Kam100 to take out tyre insurance, it helped me when it happened

Can't judge the damage remotely, but if it is indeed to the side then you need to replace the tire, or when you have driven to long with a low tire pressure (not even flat), the side wall can be damaged, so also new tire.

would only replace the one that has the problem unless the other side is in need of replacing as well, insignificant issue with the tracking...the tyre guy is just looking for a second sale, he is hardly independent

Is it not possible to change just that one and move the rear tyres forward? Malaysia Boleh!

I don't know in the UK, but anywhere in Europe, if you replace just the one which is damaged,
you're in for big trouble in case of accident. No insurance will cover anything. Opposite tyres
have to be same mount, same age.

surely tyres which have a legal amount of tread will provide tolerably similar levels of performance, regardless of age and wear?

i don't see what you would achieve by replacing a sound, legal, worn tyre with a new one.

would it not follow that you should be replacing all 4 if one got damaged?

As said, this is all country related.
Also, here, if you mount 22", you'll get bumped when passing annual test.
And if you have a blown tyre with 22" mounted, you'll feel the pain with the insurance company.
Said my broker, who has proved very reliable in other instances — and he's not a pusher.

if its a requirement it will be stated in the policy document..if the guys a broker does he know every line in the policy or is he just guessing...as regards annual test...do they check the original standard of the car...whats the baseline for the test..do you therefore need to keep all the equipment original so you cannot fit any other make of alloys etc..

If youve fitted 22" then as in this country some modifications have to be disclosed to the insurance company..this could be one of them. if you dont disclose and then have an accident then you give them grounds to reject the claim
