That isn't a craze - its a necessity. I have always had a Defender (or 2) on the driveway alongside the Sport and Disco. Essential piece of life enhancing kit. A week of long miles in the Sport followed by a weekend of plodding about in the Defender is (to me) the perfect "work life" balance. You can buy a good TDi Defender 90 for around £5k. Get a County Station Wagon and you get 6 seats (and a half), 4 of which fold away to give you a good load area for dogs, bikes, tip fodder, washing machines etc etc. Put on a roof rack and a tow bar and you can carry, lift, tow pretty much anything. And come Monday morning you just love jumping back into the Sport. You can easily maintain the Defender yourself and it doesn't depreciate at all if cared for.
