United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HST Java Black
4.2 supercharged........

After looking round it seems there are a lot of these about in good spec and decent prices!

Are they really that hard to shift on? Is the consumption that bad? Do they cost more to service?

Typically, in HST guise, there is over £5k difference!

Please help a confused man!

I've got a 4.2 S/C Love it!!!! Got it about a month ago had a bit of a fight on my hands to get it as there was another party trying to buy it at the same time!

All I can tell you is that after driving both the TDV6 & the TDV8 the Supercharged was a much more fun car to drive - for me anyway! I love the power and the sound. If you are at all worried about economy and don't like standing at the pumps then get a TDV8 or TDV6 I'm getting 13/14mpg round town and that’s not driving hard just the occasional burst! On a 100 mile run M25/M3 I got 17mpg driving at around 70 to 90mph

My next service due in March 50,000 mile I’ve been quoted £600 by main dealer. I haven’t shopped around yet for more prices. I don’t know but I think diesel cars are more expensive to service? I’m sure somebody will be along shortly to put me right on that one.

My advice would be if it’s the fun factor your looking for get Supercharged. If it’s economy you’re looking for then the TDV6/8 is the way to go Cheers Laurence.

Thanks for the reply and your honesty Smile

If you don't mind me asking, what spec is your SC and how much did you pay?

Cheers

Marcus

Hi Marcus,

It's a 2006 model on a 55plate registered late November 2005. 44k on the clock full main dealer service, one owner. Don't think there’s much it hasn't go to be honest! It has sunroof, rear tv's etc...etc even the Supercharged kick plates when you open the doors! I paid 24k for it from a dealer! I'm sure that the Supercharged came standard as higher spec than the TD models? That’s why when you see some of the TD's advertised it says supercharged spec.

Can I ask have you driven and of the Td's or S/c models yet and what your budget is?

Cheers
Laurence Cheers Laurence.

I've got an M3 I need to shift, but budget wise a max of £32k, with change preferable!!!

I know the SC is cheaper to buy, plus I do about 5k miles a year, so it seems like the obvious choice. I just worry why so many are for sale cheap, will I take a big hit come resale or even not shift it on at all?

Due to my location I haven't test driven an SC or a TDV8. A colleague of mine has the V6 2.7 which is (in my opinion) bloody awful!

I drove TDV6 although it was a nice car I found it a bit too slow for me, lots of turbo lag. I had just got out of my XKR but all the same not enough power for me. If you have M3 than your going to notice the difference (drop in power) in the S/C I notice a difference getting out of my XKR (same engine as RRs) but the RRs over double the weight!! Both cars have their pluses the XKR is quicker and like a go-kart compared to the RRs. But the RRs is in a league of its own. Yes it’s quick enough and it goes in to the bends and comes out the other end (I think it’s fair to say) a lot faster than most standard family saloon cars! The raised height, toys & extras, ride and its shire presents just set it a world apart from anything else on the road IMHO

As for the resale on a S/C your almost certainly going to lose money! However you will pay less for a better spec car in the first place with the S/C model rather than a derv model. When I was looking the same car TDV8 with same mileage and spec would've cost me an extra £10k. Like you it's a second car for me so I didn't warrant spending the extra £10k! I think you will have to go in with your eyes wide open it will be expensive to run, it will be expensive if it goes wrong (buy wisely full main dealer service is a must not an optional extra!) Get a warranty on it as soon as you buy it WMS do one if you buy privately. You'll always be able to sell it on because you and I aren't the only nutters looking for supercharged models, there are 1000's of petrol heads out there!

There’s no going back for me now I'm already saving for my 2010 model a smile a mile I just can't get out of mine. If you get one you'll love it guaranteed! Cheers Laurence.

I've seen a nice SC HST for just over £30k with well under 40k miles, do you think this is good value?

Supercharged all day long.

Way better RRS in my opinion that the diesels especially if your only going to do 5k miles a year. They arent bad to shift at all, there arent as many to choose from and getting a good one with the right colour combo, miles etc will add to that.

In HST spec it will always be desirable, to the right buyer ofcourse.

Forget the others, get the Supercharged. I got one in November and my 911 aside (totally different car) its the best car ive had to date and ive owned FFRR 4.4 Vogue (x3), X5, ML500, S8, 645Ci, SL500, the list goes on.

With your budget you can go main dealr, give James @ Lookers Park Royal (sponsor on here) a shout, he is a top man and im sure he can sort you out.

They arent more expensive to service really, and all RRS cost to own & run so consider what you want from the RRS, if its performance, luxury and a beatufil sound from the engine then S/C, if you want cheaper running costs then its a diesel but wear earplugs when you drive it Whistle

Go for it.

Carl

Just do it!

Love mine - had it from new, fully loaded, TVs in the back, etc.

'Cheap' 2nd hand I reckon due to perceived fuel economy. If you can't afford the petrol don't buy one! Wish I only did 5k miles a year, I do 15k!

Get 12mpg round town, 18-19 generally and up to 22-24 at 70mph set on cruise control. Found it improves with the miles - the engine was very tight when new and to see 18mpg anywhere was impossible. Have to say run it on supermarket fuel and never had a problem. Occassionally treat it to super unleaded and the power difference is very noticeable - I don't do it for extra economy, the pwer's too addicitve Very Happy

Generally see 330-360 miles per tank. Been to Heathrow and back at weekend on a mixture of dual carriageway, single carriageway and M25 and is showing 21.7mpg on computer (although not 100% accurate). And I don't hold back on the overtakes!

Didn't buy the TDV8 as the turbo lag did my head in. Was a wedding pressie for the wife and she wanted the S/C anyway

Servicing isn't expensive at all - just had 45,000 mile serivce from independent specialist at @£300. That's less than my 10 year old Disco Td5 at the same specialist.

Go fo it - you'll love it Thumbs Up

There is a 56 plate 32000 miles Supercharged HST at the Strastone delaer by mine for 31k which I thought was cheap

HST in my opinion is the way forward as there are more rare and usually of a massive spec
