Mod to make rear map / reading lights come on?

Another one from me!

Just wondering if anyone has done a mod, or if it's even possible to make the rear lights come on when the doors open

Just find it really weird they don't do it automatically!

Thanks MY10 HSE 3.0 TDV6 : Santorini Black : Ebony Interior w/Anigre wood : Privacy Glass (total) : Sunroof : Sidesteps : Hybrid TV : Detachable Tow Kit : Spare Wheel Cover : 22" Dished Supersports

Check out the tips and tricks section and I think there is also a FAQ for this

This thread has a link to the text of AlanM's solution to making the lights come on in the rear with the other courtesy lights - no photo's though Big Cry

http://rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic5550.html

And here is the link to the instructions. I will be doing this myself (hopefully this weekend) after I get some diodes from Maplins. I think I will pick up the feed from the light in the boot as this should involve less removal of trim panels.

Have done the modification this afternoon. Took about 90 minutes. Would have been quicker if I was competent with a soldering iron Laughing

Popped rear reading lights out of their sockets and removed the black plug. In order to reverse the switched feed you just need to remove part of the plug - this just pops off when persuaded by a small screwdriver. I had to adjust the pins in the socket slightly (pushed them down by a mm with screwdriver) so that the plug would go back in in the reversed position and the switch now interrupts the +ve feed. Did this both sides and then went to the boot. Removed the rubber seal from the opening across the top and down the offside of the car. Pushed a wire to each reading light through the headlining and took them both down the side of the trim panels to the opening where the boot light is located. I joined the two wires together and soldered in a 5404 diode. To the other end of the diode I soldered a small wire which was then joined with a Lucas clip to the live feed at the back of the courtesy light in the boot (violet wire as already mentioned).
Back at the rear lights the new wire was soldered onto the live side of the bulb (in my case left) after the switch. Now the rear reading lights come on with the other courtesy lights and also still work independently as reading lights without causing other lights to come on.

Going in from the boot meant that there was no removal of trim panels.

Thanks to Alan for his original work and the other contributors re the diode etc. Bow down Thumbs Up

It was rainig whilst I was doing the job so I didn't take any photo's.

I'll try and get some photos and upload them later during the week if it stays dry

Hi Guys, attached are the photo's of the modification. Please ignore the poor quality of the soldering - It will be improved later this week when I get some solder with flux (and another pair of hands to hold the light whilst I solder the wire onto the bulb holder. I did notice that if you just jam the wire into the side of the bulb holder this works as well, but I am going to solder mine so that the wire cannot vibrate loose.

Top man Simon, that looks far easier than the other way of doing it.

Just out of interest what gauge cable did you use.

Thanks. 2007 RRS TDV8 Stornaway Grey with lots of smiles..

Hi Sizzle

The marking on the packet says 16/0.2?

Either way it was £2:50 for 10m from Maplin

Sorry for the lack of technical knowledge

Simon
