dangerous today !!!

Girlfriend was going to work today in my range , and was going down motoway and the low power mode flashed up on the radio , she didnt know why but was lucky the next turn off was right near her work so arrived safe ...
But and big but then all the car did was conk out as she parked ..
no electrics at all ???
she rang me and I said it sounded like the alternator had given up the ghost , called my mate who is top notch auto electrician and he popped along to run some tests ....
the battery was READING ZERO ....
He tried to jump it with no luck so took battery to his workshop to blast it ...

tonight I picked up the fully charged battery and took it to the range and fitted it and hey the car started but then we tested the voltage of the battery to see if the alternator was emmiting a charge back and the voltage was as if it was on countdown lasted 3 min then car shut down . but it could have been very dangerous if happened while driving would have lost steering and , servo brakes!!!!!
I HAVE COME TO CONCLUSION ITS THE ALTERNATOR ??? why o why dont the car display a problem ?????

My alternator had the decency to light up the warning light on the dash before leaving me by the side of the M6 last year - did kill the battery in the process though Evil or Very Mad

how odd that a whole bunch of alternators seem to be going at the same time ,is this a result of recent bad weather,a batch of crap alternators,in my case i dont expect one to last just 23k miles ,thats a pathetic amount.

and dont get me started on replacement parts !

just a long shot, but lead acid car battery's hate being drained, they need constant re-charging from the
alternator. a re-charged from zero batt may have had the life sucked out of it.
i owned dare i say a new volvo a few years back and accidently left the interior light on over night.
result- battery drain. a re-charge of the batt lasted a few days and then drained, this process continued.
volvo actually wrangled me a new batt free after a period of time.

as a foot note, GEL batts can be discharged/re-charged ok, they use them in the ol folk scooters.
cost a lot more £££'s though.

Check for alternator stock with Nick, the parts manager at Yeovil Land Rover (tell him you're from RRSPORT).

He will tell you the REAL alternator situation and get you one if at all possible. Like this site? Buy some RRSPORT goodies to show your support!

Not quite the same problem, but I managed to crack the bumper on my RRS today - really annoying as I had it in low ratio, hill decent, etc and it just couldn't manage to negotiate a tight bend on a steep country hill. Anyway, gutted as I need a new bumper and my nearest 4 LR garages can't fit me in for 3 weeks+. To say I’m unhappy is an understatement. Can they really be that busy? I thought it was just me that couldn't drive!

hi all just an UPDATE !!!

Got in very late last night due to waiting for recovery truck from the AA after being tod by landrover that there is no stock of YLE 500 420 ALTERNATOR IN THE CONTRY !!

I was told the factory has none .... rather than getting the car to them at the MD was to get it relayed to home as they have no idea when they will come in stock ...

so rang local recovery and they said for 10 mile trip £240.00 as it has to be lifted due to locked wheels.. Big Cry

But remembered I had AA ROADSIDE RELAY that I have never ever used . So rang told them my problem , none at main dealer and she said ok we will relay you home Thumbs Up
Waited ages then some idiot in low loader came and did not know the wheels didnt move ( heavey rain at this point ) then he said he had these plastic wheel skates Thumbs Up wow what a bit of kit he banged them under tyres with hammer with little force positioned his elevated lorry back attached winch and the rr skated nice slow up the back Thumbs Up got back then slid car slowly in front of my garage Thumbs Up then removed skates so at least car is safe at home until this alternator issue is sorted.. The RECOVERY guy was a muppet tho had no clue how to do things, but we got there in end ..... WHATS HAPPENING THO REGARDING THESE ALTERNATORS BEEN TOLD WE ARE NUMBER 28 ON LIST COULD BE 6 WEEKS !!!!!!!!!!! BY MD
