this is my first post on the forum but i have been reading on here daily for the last few months.
i picked my range rover sport 2.7tdv6 up about a month ago and am very pleased apart from one thing - the awful fuel economy. i knew it wouldnt be good and ive done my research so was expecting around 20-22mpg around town but im lucky to get 15mpg and thats driving frustratingly slow.

i only drive around town but never in traffic as i work nights, i havnt got a heavy foot at all ive been in auto most the time but i have also been changing manually at the earliest possible to see if i can get it any better but still no luck.

i have now tried replacing the egr valves with a blanking kit from bell autos and also adding 2 stroke oil to a tank but still no better at all. if anything my estimated range is showing less

when i picked the car up i checked the trip and it said 12mpg - i just thought someone must have a very heavy foot so i reset and started my 130 mile motorway trip home. i set the cruise to 70mph and and the best i could average was 24.8mpg

surely i have got a problem with this as im trying to concentrate every time im in the rr to drive economically. if i drove normally i think the mpg would be in single figures! i might reset and drive a full tank normally. shouldn't take long!!

has anyone got any ideas what could be wrong? i dont seem to have a loss of power or any dead spots or a rough engine or any smoke

I also have had my TDV6 for about a month but have averaged about 9l/100km (31mpg) combined 115kph highway and around town. On the highway I get about 35mpg at 115kph (73mph) and around town about 28mpg.

So based on my experience you definitely have a problem. My figures are calculated figures and not those from the trip meter (it under reads by about 10%).

It could be just the town driving

My FL2 (still working hard for the D4/RRS) does 22mpg as I also do town driving and short trips etc

Though when I get on a motorway I do get it's normal 30mpg

My 2.7TDV6 is 2 years old and does around 8.3 lit/100km (34mpg) on the computer but around 31-32mpg if I measure when I fill it up, lots of highway driving at 110kph but also some inner city work. I don't drive very hard but neither do I drive like a pussy.

At 15mpg, yours is using too much even for town driving in my opinion. Maybe something is dirty? Anyway, I would have it checked. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

Have you reset the gauge or done a physical calculation to confirm the mpg?

To give you an idea my Supercharged does 16mpg average and about 12mpg in town.

Try a fuel cleaner perhaps?. Do you use supermarket fuel, it can be of poor quality ive heard?

That said i tested a new TDV6 back in 2008 and walked away because it was doing 22mpg on the motorway with a very light foot. I know that was a new car but the mpg was rubbish. Iv'e said on here before that in some cases the TDV6 is as bad as the S/C for mpg but way less fun.

Id say yours is one of the low mpg ones.

it does sound low, but setting the cruise robs a couple of mpg, as it is constantly accelerating/breaking - i only use mine on those horrible average speed things!! on a drive up from london this week, i got 34mpg average(doing it the full to full calculation way) which was almost the same as what the computer said. normally with about 70% town driving i get 24mpg (3,0ltr v6)

i still think somethings wrong even tho its town driving.
i i had a cayman s before and i had a much heavier foot in that but still got 23mpg doing the same journey.
i only ever use shell fuel and supermarket as emergency only.
all these readings are off the computer. i will refill - use a full tank and calculate to get a more accurate figure ill also reset the clock when i fill up and see how far out it is.
what are you guys who do mostly town driving getting to a tank?
think i get about 250miles from light coming on but i will check for definate on this next tank

don't believe what the trip computer tells you. It is very unreliable and not accurate in the slightest. You need to fill the tank set the trip to zero and calculate the actual MPG properly. My car does mainly town driving / stop / start, lights etc. Worst I ever got was the last tank at 16.83 mpg. This was against dreadful weather at -10 and lots of engine running at idle for long periods. I normally get 19mpg. However, if I use it urban and a bit of open road mixed, I get 24mpg consistently. On a run from Glasgow to Manchester and keep below 70mph it will return 30mpg.

Cold weather and town driving are definatley big factors in very poor fuel consumption.

The FBH cuts in and has its own thirst and cold weather will always see a drop off usually 10 to 20 percent over the warmer weather.

Try using the tiptronic box around town does make an improvement and even just using it in sport mode around town will help a little.

they really do come into their own on longer runs, mine with short school runs of late and not much else has seen 17-18mpg 100mile trip the other day fullly loaded and pulling trailer saw 27 mpg

UPDATE -

ive now done 2 tanks around town normal driving with quite a light foot no heavy accelarating where i have been monitoring my consumption and both have been around the 240-250 miles to a tank (£100 of fuel)
so thats roughly 80 litres or 17.6 gallons which makes 13.5 - 14 MPG!!!
thats crazy!
my first tank which was all motorway miles at 70ish with no traffic i got 310 which is 17.6MPG!!
either my calculations are wrong (310miles divided by 17.6 gallons) or theres something wrong with my car!
egr valves - blanked, tried 2 stroke in with diesel - any other ideas? could it be the maf sensor thinking im getting to much air so its chucking diesel in?
or could it be the dpf asking for fuel constantly to clean?

It might be worth getting it remapped with a good mapping company not a plug in and go map, Do you know the history of the vehicle? What mileage has it done has the previous owner ever had it remapped if so it might of been a dodgy one.

Before Christmas my wife who drives our car was getting about 14-15mpg on the 2.7TD. Driving id mostly in traffic never really getting over 30mph. It was definitely worse in the cold weatherthan it had been. I have been getting on mixed driving round about 22-22mpg and on a long run round about 27mpg. Have managed to get about 450 miles out of one tank on a long run.

Don't look at this pic then!! Done between Carlisle & Cobham on Tesco diesel, no cheating by resettling and coasting downhill. See, D3s save da planet!

That's not good. I would take it to a diesel specialist to seek advice?  If you see a bandwagon - it's too late.....

I had a 2.7 like yours for 4 years and around town, in traffic, school runs etc aprox 20 mpg. Motorway driving was about 24mpg!
