Hi all

I haven't actually checked which map version is in my MY06 RR S/C but am assuming it's the original DVD. Now, if I were to purchase the latest DVD I know it would update the maps plus any software revisions - but would the thing be any better at navigation?

Two journeys I've done recently I also had a Tom Tom ONE in the car as a comparison. In both instances the route suggested by the factory unit was noticeably different and, even though I selected to use major routes, it suggested going through towns and along busy 'local' routes which I know from experience would have taken longer!

I'm guessing the latest DVD wouldn't change this but happy to be wrong.

Alternatively, are there any aftermarket companies/products that fit directly in place of the factory unit - and don't cost an arm and a leg? Maybe even a combo TV/Sat-Nav thing?

It may add some detail such as new roads or road layout changes & new POI's but as far as the performace when calculating routes I have noticed no improvement when I updated my 2007 car to the 2009 disc and again no improvement with my new 2010 cars system. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

I always carry a good old fashioned paper road map as backup for the RRS Sat Nav........ Kinda defeats the purpose somewhat

Have to agree, these vehicles aren't cheap yet some elements of them are laughable

The factory satnav on my 2001 X5 was better than the one in my RRS I'm sure of it, I bet even a TT ONE from years back that cost less than a decent meal for four would better the factory unit!

I have the latest 2010 disc an it does add extra data but that's about it.

The 2001 X5 nav is definitely not better than his, i had that and its pants. It was CD based for a start.

The latest disc is worth having since you have near 5 year old version so the road changes will be a big help for sure. Get one off eBay etc rather than pay full price though.

Thanks Carlos, my BMW SatNav was DVD-based (upgraded) so not the original CD-based one.

Happy to source a 2010 DVD from an 'alternative' source, problem at the moment is accessing the unit under the seat; move the seat fulyl up/forward and I can only see the back of the DVD unit, move it fully back and the front is covered with a big chunk of plastic - anyone know how to remove the plastic guard under the seat before I end up breaking it?

You can just about get the disc out without removing the plastic cover under the seat,just dont move the seat fully back and you should be able to get the disc out its a bit of a fiddle but a torch under the seat makes it easier. 2007 HSE in black with 22 inch id ones with privacy glass.

Move the seat all the way up and all the way forward, it tells you this in the manual.

I followed the manual to change out my disc and it was a sinch.
