BKHK please do, mine is out of warranty in the next 8 weeks, so if it does break, now i think is best.

I do get a noise on some road surfaces and put it down to the surface itself, last time the dealer put it down to wheel balancing. I no longer get any vibrations from the wheel, just the whirring noise..but not always Neutral baffling Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

Quick update

On a warranty check yesterday, a LR specialist put it down on my TDv6 to worn front control arm bushes. He believes that this is causing undue "bounce" on the front end, the tyres are then wearing unevenly, and therefore cause a rumbling affect on the road, they have seen this on a number of Sports and D3's of around 2 years plus age. They explained that this means that the road noise can be exaggarated dependent on the surface.

They were not a LR dealer, but a specialist who can provide full warranty repair and servicing.. who undertake repairs for Allianz who are the LR Australia extended warranty option... and yes i have taken it out for another 3 years/60K kms Another Pommie Bar Steward down under

On this note.. i had my RRS SC serviced last week at our dealer, its done 110K km and when i got it back they said they had changed the diff! It wasnt even making any noise but apparently they said its their direction from Land Rover to change the diff when it gets to this mileage. Its out of warrenty but was all covered by Land Rover.

If you need any more info let me know, i might be able to get some from the dealer,

I've got a severe rumbling noise from the front end on mine (tdv6 07) I dont know what diff noise sounds like but I've replaced the front discs/calipers and all four wheels and it's made no difference.

I'd really appreciate it if someone and I realise it's difficult, could describe the noise? Mine is a constant rumble but it's not mono tone it's like the noise a train makes going over the tracks, if that makes any sense? it increases and decreases with speed.

Many thanks in advance,

Ant. Crying or Very sad

Hi All
I have the same noise on my 55 Plate HSE 2.7. it only occurs between 1700 - 2100 RPm Big Cry , it is difficult to describe but a slight resonance can be felt through the steering, Could it be the diff, and if so is there a recall?

any thoughts greatly appreciated mileafge on my car is 36k mls.
Thanks

No the 1700-2100 rpm noise is not diff related. It is more likely to be engine mount related.

However, as LR will tell you, this is a characteristic of the 2.7TDV6 engine .....partly true, it is a resonant frequency band but it should not be intrusive. Both of mine have had a resonance between these RPM but not so much that I would complain about it. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

seems like I also have a diff problem.

Took the car to the stealer and they pinpointed a small leak from the rear diff..I have an '05 S/C. They are advising me to change the entire diff.
Thing is, I never noticed the leak...seems as if it was hitting the exhaust and just burning off before touching the ground. And there's no noise that I can hear coming from the diff either.

Anyways , so I asked if we could just replace the seal. They said that they wouldn't advise that (because there would be no guarantee that it wont happen again Confused )and that I should just replace the entire diff. I'm way out of warranty. I've had vehicles for twice this amount of time and never had to consider problems such as diff replacement.
Plan to keep the vehicle for about two more years...should I change the diff as per the stealer?

get them to replace the entire diff at THEIR COST. my 2007 disco3's rear diff was replaced at 57000kms and the front at 71000kms. the front diff is leaking AFTER BEING REPLACED BY A LR DEALER! When I took it in for a holiday check, they pointed out that the diff leaks and that I should book the Disco in to replace the diff. You should have heard them going quiet when I informed them that it is leaking due to their sloppy work and that they'll have to pay for it.

to get back to your situation - if i were you i would get LR involved as it is a design/quality fault. also check that there was a recall on all LR models (2005 - 2007) due to a type of coating used on the internals of the diffs. the fact that the RRS use the same/similar drivetrain as the Disco I would take it that it should be covered by that recall.

good luck

Hi All

I have an 05 RRS 2.7, and it sounds like I have a similar problem. I get a rumble/vibration transferred up teh steering column whilst driving, mainly between 20-30 mph, it does some appear at higher speeds and under load, but 80% of the time at 20-30.

I have had a new wheel bearing replaced already as it was worn and had the other checked at the same time. The car has been in to landranger.co.uk in Stockport, they said it coudl be the front diff, but the oil in it ws clean, suggested an re-con diff to be fitted, appx £800-900 inc vat.

I have a AA waranty and I am currently arguing with them about the claim, they said unless the diff was off, and the actual fault found, they would not consider a claim, and if it fails now then it is my fault for driving with a knownb fault...... F'in warranty companies.... Evil or Very Mad

If i get a result I will update this thread.

Hi all,

I have a 2008 RRSport 2.7 se 125000km. Recently I noticed a whirring noise when travelling above 50km/h so I brought car to main dealer. They said it was the diffs and they would have to be changed at enormous expense to me as it is out of warranty. I took the car away in shock and annoyance. I then took it to a garage local to me on the recommendation of a friend. This garage owner drives an older range rover. He and his father have always driven range rovers. He drove my car and heard the noise. At 100km/h on a smooth road he took the car out of gear into neutral and let it freewheel. The noise continued at the same level. He said it cant be the diffs because the noise should have stopped when the car was taken out of gear. He is now checking the bearings.

Rear Diff Leak

I have a RRS TDV8 In general I have been very pleased with the vehicle, however over the last few months it has developed a loud whine or hum that rises and falls with speed and which appears to be coming from the differential which is also leaking oil. The vehicle is low mileage (50800).
On investigating possible causes I came across Service Action A051 – Rear Differential Oil Contamination, which affects Range Rover Sport model year 2007 in the VIN range LS 6A980551 to LS 7A986567. My vehicle falls within this range - being 7A107169. The action advises that “continued use of the vehicle may result in excessive wear of the differential gears, bearings or seals” and “may lead to noise or an oil leak” and requires affected vehicles to be to be modified with a replacement rear differential.

I called LR Customer Care and provided details of my vehicle and they confirmed my vehicle fell within the range of this Service Action and that there was no record of my vehicle being modified as required. I also contacted Sturgess of Leicester who sold me the car and asked if they were aware of the action and whether the modification had been carried out. They informed me that they had no record of the modification and it was not their responsibility to ensure the modification had been done as the Service Action had expired before they had responsibility for the vehicle. They declined to inspect the vehicle unless I agreed to pay for the cost, in effect washing their hands of the problem. Big Cry

I now find myself, through no fault of my own with a vehicle in which a mandatory Service Action has not been carried out and which is showing clear symptoms of an acknowledged manufacturing defect, and for which the cost of repair is substantial.

What to do next ? Any Suggestions ? jaguar XKR 4.2S

Has anyone got a definitive list of vehicles recalled for front or rear diff problems, and what sort of price should you pay for a recon replacement? Price seems to have jumped from about £350 a few years ago to about £900 now (Front)....
