Snow Driving - need some advice !!

Ok both me and a friends dad have RRS and have been out in the snow over the last couple of days !!

Now he has been complaining about the car in the snow and saying its the worst 4x4 he;s ever driven and that the abs comes on too early and it slips all over the place !!

I thought he was over reacting til i drove it earlier and its terrible compared to mine !!

Now mine is a S/C on 22's (285/35/22 Yokohama) and he's is a 2.7 td on 20's (275/40/20 Pirelli P-Zero)

A few things have gone through my mind about what the probs could be but thought i'd see the experts - could it be tyre pressures or are the tyres for summer use only etc ??

Cheers

Hi bud, you've answered your own question, its defiantly the tyres, although i use summer tyres i know the difference a decent set of winter tyres can make! have you tried the snow setting? If it aint broke leave it!

Yea car has been in snow setting all the time and still is useless !!

I have tried to look on the net to see if the tyres are summer or winter but I can't find out

What should the pressures be !? I'll get him to check in the morning ?

Pirelli p-zero's are summer tires, and although I have no experience on how these perform on snow/ice conditions, I am sure they are not suited for winter. These tires where developed for maximum performance in summer conditions.

All summer tires perform badly in winter obviously (some worse than others), here is some more info:

I would guess you have the HDC (big yellow button) on - this will apply the breaks at very low speeds. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

P Zero are a terrible snow tyre full stop.

Had these on my last car and it would barely move (it wasn't a RRS).

But :-

To say the RRS is useless in snow is a bit odd no matter what the tyres, you must be driving hard to have the ABS on all the time. Sounds like your stomping on the brakes, nobody does that in the snow ?????

Mine has summer tires and not once have i had that happen even in normal road mode. Slow down.

Don't expect Defender like traction in a RRS without snow tyres, simple as.

Don't think u read my first post - my rrs is bang on in the snow but I drove my mates as he was complaining of it being useless and when I drove it exactly the same as mine it was how he described.

In mine I can brake to a halt easily without the abs coming on or sliding - in that one u can't even at 10mph it will still lock up even just feathering the pedal

In the link provided you can see what it all can influence. The next question is then how a tire made for summer conditions from 1 manufacturer compares to another summer tire in winter conditions they where not made for, there could be again huge differences. I am not even allowed with my max summer tires to drive in below zero just to give an idea. If you want to find out, swap wheels, than you will know if it is car or tire related. RRS SDV6 HEV Dynamic

Apologies M4CES, in that case it will be the P Zeros tyres.

Do what avos suggested and sway wheels with your friend, if your own starts to drive badly then problem solved.

Had PZero on my previous car (MB E-Class)...i couldn't drive in the winter at all... pzero + rwd = Censored
Now we had lot of snow and ice allready. I fitted RRS with M+S Hankook Ventus (all year tyres) and is doing very well. Type of tyres is big difference i'd say

I discovered the same in mine yesterday in a brown pants moment, basically doing about 5-10mph in very snowy icy conditions and applied very light brake pressure to have ABS kick in, repeatedly taking foot of brake and reapplying caused the same issue and it was a very near rear end job of a van!

I actually rang Land Rover Assist and asked for advice as it was so bad in or out of snow mode.

Their advice was to switch off the DSC and leave it in snow mode which made it much better to drive and prevented the ABS kicking in on the slightest touch.

After reading this forum I'm now researching better all year/terrain tyres to replace the current Goodyear things on there that are bloody useless (in the snow)!

Yes you really should be driving in the Snow & Ice mode and don't forget HDC when coming down hills on icy road. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
