This is a question for people who have installed a 2-way UHF radio in their RRS.

Just curious to find out how people are routing the cables from the aerial into the car? Without a bull/nudge bar to mount the aerial to, my only option is to mount it to the roof rail track but I can't work out an obvious way to run the cables into the car.

My solution is as follows:

I have mounted an inobtrusive CD930 antenna onto an aluminium L-bracket which passes thru a slot cut into the plastic skirt behind the bonnet on the passenger side, and this is then screwed to the vertical metal work behind....after a bit if minor twisting of the bracket. (when I sold the car I simply fitted a new skirt, which wasn't OTT $.)

The cable leads directly thru the firewall behind the centre console to the gme 3440 UHF which is fitted under the transmission cover plate next to the gear selector. The microphone, which contains all the operational controls, is mounted within the storage compartment under the armrest/lid. When the UHF is required I simply lead the microphone cable out from under this lid next to the latch and rest it on the centre console. The armrest/lid closes ok over the cable.

This arrangement means that the whole installation is out of sight until needed and the antenna does not look out of place on the vehicle. Although it is not a 1.5m yacht mast antenna, I find that its function is more than sattisfactory, and it can remain permanently on the car.

no, the aerial is positioned just behind the edge of the bonnet which operates on articulated hinges in a "forward slide" motion

Had similar probs myself including one installation 'specialist' refusing to work on it wsying it was too complicated from someone who didn't know the car well.

Ended up getting the guys at All 4x4 in Newcastle to help me with it.

Solution was a custom bracket mounted passenger side and fed through the firewall at the back, then along behind the centre console. The head unit is actually mounted behind the kickplate beneath the steering wheel.

The only thing I found is that the speaker wasn't loud enough and I mounted a standard mini speaker above the mic.

Both mic and speaker mounts are held on with dbl sided tape so I can remove them without leaving any marks if/when I go to sell it.

Thanks Jimmy, that looks like a neat setup. Can I assume from the photos that the bracket is welded in place?

I went to a 4WD shop in Hornsby the other day to ask for their advice and he made it pretty clear that he wasn't interested in trying to install anything on the car as it would be too hard. He even tried to quote me a very high hourly rate for installation so knowing that he wasn't interested in helping I thought I'd stir him up so I just said that was fine and I'd be happy to pay it; you should have seen the look on his face!!!

Anyway, that has certainly helped me with some ideas on how to do it. Whichever way you go with the mounting bracket, Would recommend you have it sprayed in same colour as your car to make it less noticeable. 'Black Betty' Java Black RRS 07 TDV6
