About to buy a RRS G4 - help needed!

Hello all,
I'm taking the step from a 350Z to a G4 RRS, could anyone tell me what to look for (faults etc).

Also, could someone advise the approximate running costs? I'm not expecting cheap motoring, even compared to my current car!

Thanks

John

I run one as my daily car, do about 30k a year. What do want to know and do you have the reg of the one you're interested in ?

Unless it's one of the half dozen 09 cars I assume you're talking about the petrol V8 that I have in mine, in which case you're looking at ~14mpg with the roofrack on, or ~19mpg with it off. Funnily enough, I've put my roofrack in the garage Laughing Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.

Hi,
Thanks for coming back to me. The reg of the one I looked at was BV55YZC. It's at Nene Overland. Unfortunately we couldn't agree on a part ex for my 350Z so the deal is on hold until I can sell the car privately.

What faults should I look for when buying one of these? The engine seemed slow to respond to downchanges in full auto mode - is this normal? I'm not used to autos so it might be me.

Would I be a wimp in getting a TDV6/8 instead?

Thanks

TDV8 is only available for the more recent G4 RRS's - 58 plate I think but ISTBC. If it's a price thing the the 55 reg is only available with petrol engines. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

I wondered if it was the one at Nene, they've had that for nigh on a year now, IMHO it's very overpriced. I saw it at Billing show, from memory it's got worn road tyres on it so depending on what you want it for you might want to get Nene to put a set of MTR's on it for you, or at least a new set of road tyres.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was slow on the change, given the amount of time it's been effectively stood (other than being taken to a couple of shows in an attempt to sell) as it'll need a good bit of use to sort itself out. Mine was like that after the LR dealership I bought it from unplugged the battery for 2 weeks after I put the deposit down, ended up getting them to redo the software. It's been fine ever since, although they're not the quickest on the downchange anyway, there's a fair bit of 'dead' accelerator travel on the V8 before it does anything. Drive it in sport mode though and downshift yourself, it should go down instantly as long as it's not going to over-rev itself. Approaching roundabouts etc I generally 'drive' it in sport mode, makes the downshifts occur when I want, rather than waiting for the message to be sent from the ECU Laughing

Watch out for the 'usual' RRS failings, front bushes / balljoints etc and make sure Nene put an absolute cast iron warranty on it. I have the full LR warranty with mine and it's already paid out for new rear driveshafts & steering column shafts.

Drop me a message though if there's anything particular you'd like to ask. I've done near on 25k in mine since buying it in December (just turned 44k) and we love it. Mine's been converted to run on LPG and although that's said to be a bad thing, I'm not finding any of the issues to date. If you want one of the 6 or 7 TDV8/6's built for the 09 Challenge then you'll need to be very lucky to find one and also find about £40k. The 57 plate Recce car was sold 2 weeks ago by Harwoods, was up for £42k Shocked

I've also got a photo of YZC attached by rope to the back of mine in Thailand... Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE. Subtle shade of orange ! Now registered YZE481 G4RRS in Melbourne.

Thanks for the info Mike. It's hard for someone new to RRS to see what's overpriced and what is fair, especially with a model/spec as niche as the G4. I've only found three for sale, the Nene one, one at Paddock in Essex & one with a private trader in Edinburgh (who also has a Pagani Zonda on his books!). The other two are £25k but I'm not sure if they're genuine or replicas.
I'm really unsure whether to keep persuing the G4s or to play it safe and buy a standard TDV6 and stick a snorkel & winch on! I'm smitten with the G4 but will the running costs & wind noise from the roof rack drive me nuts?

Looks real enough, can't see the reg though to check.

The G4 cars are certainly 'different' and that's the exact reason I bought mine, makes a change from the usual black ones you see. As for running costs, unbolt the roofrack, bung it in the garage and the mpg becomes palatable. Wind noise can be high with the rack on as well. I know a few people don't like that but hey, it's my car.

Buying a RRS in the UK and then fitting the snorkel / winch / underbody protection etc just devalues it. The winch cradle is one hell of a thing to bolt on and as you can see needs the bumper to be cut up. Not to mention how much it costs to buy / fit. It's those things that make the G4 worth buying if that's what you want, the goodies attached to it that you essentially get for free. Having 3 or 4 to choose from is good for you, given they only made 35 in that colour and half of them were LHD !

£25k for the 05 plate at Paddocks is good. That's one of the pre-event cars as it's on an 05 plate so would (I think) have been used for the selections and event. Given what they're being advertised for it's almost tempting me into selling mine, but then 2 of those cars have been for sale for a while now. Laughing Ex-G4 Challenge RRS HSE, BV55 YZE.
