air is drawn into the air suspension system (and cleverly dried to stop water building up in the holding tank).. but where is it drawn in from? is it higher up than the level at which the engine vent is? one of those wonderful diagrams would do the trick

Good question! I have never thought of this and I really don't know the answer!

I assume it's where component number 9 (air filter) is, in which case it looks pretty high up at the rear of the vehicle.
