Vibrations

Hello all,

I've just purchased a 2010 HSE TDV6 3.0 which drives very well and is an all round wonderful car except for some vibrations in that drive me nuts.

There are 2 separate "frequencies" and types:

1. One is more or less only noticable in the sterring wheels when it is in an off-centre position and power is given. This intermittant steering wheel vibration feels like an electric toothbrush when it occurs. The problem can be demonstarted when the car is parked, steering turned about 30degrees and one depresses and releases the gas pedal. It rises and drops with engine RPM.

2. The second, more annoying vibration can be felt through steering pedals and seats. It is most obvious when the car is in "D" stopped at a tradfic light. The vibration is of a lower frequency and higher amplitude that the in part 1. The vibration is related to motor speed and can be reduced by about 70% by putting the car into "N" when stopped. It is not dramatic, but it is not what I would expect in a luxury vehicle - even a diesel. I've tested it with an Iphone vibration measurement app and it seems to be a 35-37Hz vibration at idle (in "P") with a .005mm amplitude on the steering wheel (should that be of any help to anyone).

The car idles at about 800rpm and as far as I can feel the vibration seems to be gone at about 1100rpm when in "N"

I would be very grateful to hear if anyone else had either of these vibrations. Are they normal in the TDV6 as my dealer says? any solutions or ideas to improve the situation?

Many thanks in advance,

Bob

Bob, are you using the standard issue wheels and tyres or have you fitted a larger size set? Also check and see if all the balance weights on the front wheels are still in place. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced

Thanks Gentlemen,

I'm not sure I made it clear, but the vibrations take place when the car is stopped too particularly #2. BTW #1 is accompanied by a whining sound (not loud but hearable).

Regards

B

my 2010 models steering wheel vibrates slightly espcially when cold and as you say when turning, it is just the power steering pump working away, but you can feel it when you are looking for it - i put it down to the hugh amount of torque getting put down on the road and it doesnt bother me too much. not had any vibration elsewhere though.
cheers

Thanks Codfather! Yes, that sounds like vibration #1 above. I'm not sure that it has to do with the engine torque since it also take place when the car in is stopped "N".

Do you know if it is an electric powering steering setup or traditional hydraulic, and how it is driven - belt etc? It seems to me that the vibration might be coming from a misaligned or defective belt or ancillary device which is not properly mounted.

Regarding vibration #2: do you feel any (even slight) engine vibration through the steering wheel peddles and seat when stopped in "D", or is the car very, very still ?

Many thanks again,

Bob

bob,
mine is vibration free in neutral, i would ask your dealer again to check it out! my mate had his new freelander in a few times with a rattle that his previous one didnt have, and he got the brush off a couple of times, but eventually they found the sunroof had not been tightened up!
it is a shame when something like this annoys as it does affect how you look at the car - i have been lucky with mine, it is as quiet as a mouse most of the time, but previous cars have been sporty japanese stuff so coming from them to this car is quite a step up in terms of finish. saying that my old merc ML was a cracker despite the horror stories about build quality

cheers
