tonight my wife came out of the house to run an errand as i was putting the car in the garage, i suggested she use mine as the engine was still running. she got to her parents house, then got back into the car ......it wouldnt start, cos the key was in my pocket 2 miles away! i thought the car would have gone into reduced power or something to say key was out of range? this is the only thing i dont like about these keys, i prefer sticking something into the dash!!

engine was still running, so it must have thought key was in the car, i have tried to start the car before when key was in my back pocket and i was standing outside car and it wouldnt work until the key was within the car, must be a safety thing where it doesnt cut out down the road. saying that the dash was probably lit up like a christmas tree, but wife would have had stereo cranked up and wouldnt have noticed!!! My engine runs fine if I step outside the car and stay near it. But I always assumed that if you run the engine and walk away, it would be still running, but you would not be able to start it once you shut it down...? Vadim A. |

you assume correctly, that it wouldnt start again, but it was just a pain trying to repatriate the key with the car!! as i said in first post, i think i prefer lodging the key in the dash , even like the freelander than the way the rrs works! Yep, That's correct it does. BUT, it is crazy that you can drive away with the car even if the key is out of range! If it has the tech to tell you on the dash that the key is out of range then it should also be able to turn off the engine! There is also another issue with the key. When taking our wee fella to the zoo, in the process of getting his buggy and all his associated stuff out of the car, I forgot my key was lying on the centre console. The car locked as normal! When I returned after a day in the zoo and suddenly couldn't find my keys I assumed I'd dropped them somewhere! Then I spotted them in the car! What an idiot BUT Lo & Behold pulling the door handle opened that car I guess I'm very lucky no one tried my doors or I'd have been minus 1 RRS & with void insurance I'm amazed the car allows you to lock the car with the keys in it! I know 2 or 3 other people that have done the same thing as me! I wonder if anyone has lost a car because of this? 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black 2013 Evoque 5 Door Pure Tech SD4 - Orkney Grey with Panoramic Roof (Mrs E's new baby) GONE - RRS - 3.0 TDV6 HSE - Santorini (2010) GONE - RRS - 2.7 TDV6 HSE - Java Black (2007) GONE - Porsche Boxster S - 3.2 - Black |

It would be dangerous if the car just suddenly cut the engine! I've done the same in a renault before and I believe all makes work in the same way and let you keep driving. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

The comfort access in the X5 wont lock the car at all if the key is in the car. Thats how they say to wash it or the car keeps locking and unlocking while your washing. If I get out the car with the engine running as soon as I step out the DIC in the dash AND the i-drive both ping up with no key present. No way you could miss it to be honest. If you did then you shouldn't be driving in the first place. Never tried driving it with the key in the house though but it will keep idling on the drive but it sits chiming it's head off till I get back in again. The Jag XF has the same system, but in that you can't change gear out of Park without the key inside the cabin... |
