I have recently bought a 2007 TDV8 and love the car apart from an irritating vibration/ringing/humming noise. Something is resonating around the front end of the vehicle depending on the road surface. Basically if driving on a silky smooth surface then the resonance is hardly noticable, when driving on our usual motorway surfaces I hear the noise (sometimes loudly - i.e. can be heard over the tyre, engine and radio noise) , and feel the resonance coming up the steering column.

The ringing can also be heard briefly when driving over the typical expansion joints in motorway bridges.

Taking the engine out of gear has no effect. Revving the engine has no effect. On smooth surfaces there is no noise/little noise so don't believe it is a 'mechanical' (i.e. drivetrain) issue. Everything points to a vibration of something metallic.

Today I removed the engine undertray (metal sump guard) and the noise is still present. My current thinking is it might be the stone guards behind the brake discs.

Any ideas appreciated..!
