Noticed recently that when putting foot to the floor in mine a lot of black smoke is chucked out from the exhaust.

Doesn't appear when going steady but when fast acceleration is needed it is very noticeable (ie. on motorways, slip roads etc....)

I am in a 2.7Diesel. Is this the norm or anyone know what it could/might be before I go as far as getting it looked at ?

marty you do get some smoke when you floor it - shouldn't be loads though, but a little - and you shouldn't see lots of black smoke......but get it checked out if it's a concern

My X5 used to black smoke like a trooper when you give it a bootfull. so much so that i just had to boot it every time i passed a Prius or a smart, just to wind em up

Think this one of the symptoms associated with a EGR valve failure
