I know that in some cars the spare wheel actually plays a role in the colision characteristics of the vehicle helping to absorb some of an impact or influencing how the car deforms. A good point NF, There was a discussion on the D3 forum a while back on the crash scenario - I think LR comment was that the spare was not an integral part of the protection system. Mind you, bound to help a bit you'd think, a big chunky thing like that.  D2 - D3- RRS onwards & upwards !

I was always led to believe the spare wheel was important in the crash scenario. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
