Computer geeky tech knowledge help required

Please keep it simple for me, not to much tech speak.

Had the misfortune to update desktop and laptop when only windows vista was available.

The laptop though a better spec than my old one still runs a lot slower than windows XP and desktop runs about the same as old one but once again is a better spec

So the question is, would I gain a better performance by updating to Windows 7 and ditching the vista Question

Try increasing your virtual memory. My laptop had really slowed down and this made a real difference. Google virtual memory and there is a MS page.

Vista is inherently slow - in fact an awful operating system. Windows7 will run much quicker - it transformed my laptop when I upgraded

Yes, don't waste time and effort trying to tune Vista for better performance, just upgrade to Windows 7, ideally doing a fresh installation once you've copied all the stuff you want to keep Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.8::MG Montego Turbo::MGB GT::Rover Sterling::MGF::MG ZT 190+

Vista is a very slow, resource hogging OS, Windows 7 would improve the performance of the machine.

What specs are the laptop & the pc?

Do u run Mcafee? Norton? Sophos?

All these AV products are memory / resource hoggers...

Run MSCONFIG and remove unwanted startup items that only need to run when you need them.
