2007 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black
Newbie question - which one should I buy!

Hi everyone,
We've decided to buy a Sport after struggling for over a year to squeeze our baby, and everything that comes with him, into an M3.
The M3 has now gone and we are starting to shortlist a few RRS's. Any advice on which model to buy would be greatly appreciated.

We have around 30k to spend and have found a few different possible options
-57/08 2.7 tdv6 S or SE spec with pretty low mileage and remaining warranty
-07 or earlier 2.7 tdv6 HSE spec with 40k ish on the clock
-07 ish tdv8 HSE but with higher mileage (60+k)

I have read that some have models have suspension problems and other niggles and I know some people say the 2.7 is a bit sluggish, if that's true then it could be important for me as from time to time I'll be pulling my track car with it, but overall I'm just looking for a bit of balanced advice really.

Thanks in advance and I'll apologise now if I should have searched the archive first!
Cheers
Damion

07 or earlier 2.7 tdv6 HSE spec with 40k ish on the clock seems your best bet - lot of people say things about the TDV6 about power etc...but for those of us who own them, we're more than happy. I see RRS as a leisurely car, not to cane the arse out of. But will still sit on the Mway at 120, and is nimble if driven well.......

Hello

Don't worry about pulling with it. i pulled and scissor lift with mine on a weekly basis its 3 tone all told.
i had my tdv6 for three years and no problems with anything apart from EGR valve which is common.
if your worried about power just have a remap which will take you to about 240 BHP.

Good luck with your purchase fella

Women, flies, my knee (when I sometimes forget to put it in access mode - me being 42 years old)

Never pulled anything mate - have a thing about seeing any cars with a tow bar.....

Have a good look about. I got a 06 TDV6 HSE from LPR back in Jan for your budget with only 18.5k on the clock Thumbs Up

Just to add its gonna feel sluggish after an M3. Mine did after owning an Evo but its a completly different car Thumbs Up

I don't tow often -but when I do the TDV6 is absolutely fine. I towed a 2.5 ton boat from Manchester to Glasgow recently and I hardly noticed the boat was attached to the car. And the fuel consumption when towing was excellent (26 mpg as opposed to 30 mpg on motorway) I also had to tow a boat and trailer off road last week (2 ton) and the low box made a difficult job simple. Get an HSE. You will regret it if you buy anything less. The TDv8 is the daddy - but for the money, a good TDv6 HSE is the dogs.
Muff

PS my next one will be the new TDV6 3.0 HSE If you see a bandwagon - it's too late.....

Now had my 06 2.7TDV6 HSE for two weeks - was a bit of a departure for me, but so far very pleased.

The 2.7 is quick enough to overtake, and hustles along nicely. It's got a good slug of torque, and has a nice characeter.

That said, it's not a quick car (as in TVR/911/ etc.) but as others have said that's not what it's about. It feels faster than the figures suggest on paper, and I haven't yet had cause to wish it had more power. (Never driven a V8 diesel one though...)

A friend who tows a lot, and has towed with D5 Series II Discos, and V8 Series II Discos, reckons that his friend's RRS 2.7 is the best tow car he's ever driven. (Towing a Healey 3000 for classic rallying, so probably not a million miles away from your suggested use.)

Good luck on the search.

Martin

Hi
We've just finished our search. Laughing

we had a similar budget and preference of car choice to the OP.

We have bought a March 2007 (07) RRS TDV8 HSE with 41,000miles on the clock for £33k in black with alpaca interior.
This was from a LR dealer and we got a few extras thrown in to the deal as well. We also got a 12 month LR full warranty and UK/Euro breakdown assist included in the deal.

I'd spent 5 months looking for a TDV6 and was swayed to a TDV8 only in the last few weeks of looking as the prices were getting closer to the TDV6 albeit mileage/age adjusted. but bang for buck I felt the engine was worth the extra money.

Good luck hunting for your car - you should get lower mileage cars than 60k+ for your money. servicing on TDV8 is every 15,000 miles

keep an eye on Pistonheads, Autotrader, V car, LR own used site and of course on here - all will become your friend!! Rolling with laughter

cheers
Rob

Thanks everyone for your posts. I have found a few that we are starting to view. Driven an 08 TDV6 now and quite liked it but was pretty basic spec so we are going to hold out for an HSE.
Any specific problems I should look out for when viewing/test driving?
Cheers

Things to remember..............................its made in Britain so as usual is only 95% finished but the 5% they forgot will drive you mad, suspension knocks, nothing seems to work, sat nav can't find its way out of a carpark let alone a destination you actually want to get to, and the dealers and LR are pretty shocking to deal with at any time.

I hasten to add it seems as if LPR are the only dealer that seem to be recommended time and time again, wish they were local to me, would be nice to have a service to match the brand image. So if you really want to buy I would suggest getting the best 4 x 4 by far from the best possible place, that seems LPR, I have never been there so this is just what I have picked up from here and it is where I would concentrate my efforts.
