rear brake stuck on?

Hi all
last night i was heading down the motorway and i suddenly felt a shuddering as i was driving so i turned off on the next junction and when i stopped and got out, the rear drivers side wheel was smoking and was red hot. i thought the calliper has seized so i call the AA.
he came and took my wheel off and greased everything and told me it was ok but im sure it was the hand brake shoes which has stuck on not the calliper.

has anyone had this before?

thanks

Yes, I had the parkbrake shoe linings disintegrate on one side, and the linings (well, what was left of them) jammed inside the drum, it got so hot it melted the little plastic plug in the hole for adjusting the park brake shoes. This was also accompanied by the 'screamer' of a noise you get when you apply the park brake, when it is knackered, or clearly out of adjustment Shocked . I replaced the shoes, and adjusted them properly (unlike the useless dealer did previously Whistle ) and all has been fine since. But be aware, that caliper pistons and pads have been known to seize also, so you could have either problem. I think in your case if you could drive it without the disc / drum getting hot, then the AA man must have freed off the correct parts, but it could happen again. Mine could be driven but the drum got very hot and was not easy to turn when I jacked it up to see what was wrong.Luckily I was not far from home so didn't drive it far in this condition. RRS TDV8 Buck Blue (no, not now in my dreams). ..........D3 TDclankety clankV6 ............BMW 318i
