Netherlands 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Buckingham Blue
Shouting LR dealer

OK, here is one:

I bought my car in august last year, fully waxed and buffed.
After that i had the car 3 times hand washed by the same guy, who did a perfect carfull job.

Three days ago, i picked up my RRS at the LR dealer in Spain, after she had been serviced.
As a kind of service, they washed my (almost clean) car in a automated carwash.
This without my authorization, since i did not know this was part of the service.

Drove back in the dark. Next morning, when i took the car out of the garage, i found the car
covered in light scraches and also the RH headlight had been scratched.
The car was obviosly whiped down after the wash, because you could see that those whipes
had the same patern as the scratches. The cloth must have contained some dirt or sand.

Because my spanish is not yet so good to start an argument, my wife called the LR dealer for me.
Knowing my wife, she is very polite and would never raise her voice or get personal.
Nor she indicated in the conversation that it was his particular fault. Only indicating the car
was scratched at the car wash and it needed an inspection.
When she adressed the problem, the store manager started to shout at her, telling her
that: "At LR we repair cars, we dont scratch cars!!!!!!!". He continued shouting during the
whole conversation, not even willing to listen to the complaint.
He continued telling that we didn't need to bring the car to him on monday, since he was
nothing going to do about it, because it was not true. That we didn't have to be a scientist
to under stand that!!!
After he told her some more unpolite words, the conversation was finished.

Now this guy needs to be corrected. It is the LR dealer i'm talking about, not the local
used car shop.
And talking like that to my wife?
The scratches moved now to the second place, because i will never accept that i pay
700 euros for a service, get my car scratched, and than my wife mis treated.

Can any body who knowstell my rights on this matter.
Perhaps the site sponsor LR dealer??? Whistle
James i'm very interested in your opinion in this case. SW

Seems difficult, unless you prove your case their washmatic somehow scratches vehicles
and yours wasn't beforehand.
You may call for an expert from your insurance company. I did this once for my Jaguar,
which I washed myself in a carwash with so-called non-scratch wipers or whatever you
call it.
As the car was 6 years old and obviously had some small scratches already, I showed them
the pattern of their machine on my bonnet. They accepted a 150 € compensation.
No way I could ask for a total repaint of my already 6 years old bonnet.

For a new car (which I'll get in a few weeks from now), my advice is simple :
before any servicing, check-in or whatever, have the hand-over sheet precisely
indicating any defect, dirt, bump or anything.
So to firmly keep the rascals at bay.
That applies also for hotels carparks : 2 years ago, my Jaguar was nicked by a hotel
customer who did'nt know hiss rear bumper from a hole in the ground, and got away
with it.
I filed a complaint with the hotel garage, and after some heated phonecalls obtained that their insurance company
cover the excess due.
Since then, I take pics of the car beforehand — so that there will be no painful after damage haggling.

name and shame and never use again - make sure any other potential customer is well informed before they use the dealer

It doesn't sound like good treatment. I can only assume that they use a similar system to us in the UK where vehicle are inspected and signed fir by both parties before work commences (whenever possible, but most certainly when cars are dropped in by the customer themselves). If so then ask to see the condition report. Also if you alerted them to the damage before you drove away or after the event. It can be easy for a dealer to be defensive as we can be accused of all sorts of things, however if it was seen in as undamaged and then collected damaged then they need to accept responsibility.

Your first step should be to talk to the dealer (which didn't work), then write to the dealer, then if that fails write to the importer in your home market. Free advice is always handy, however if you feel particularly strongly about this then seek proper qualified advice.

It is an occupation hazzard handing customers cars back having had a courtesy clean as swirl marks are very easy to make if the person cleaning the vehicle has not pre-rinsed and not looked after their cleaning materials.

Hope this helps?

Only way to avoid this is to insist your car does not ever get washed or hoovered when it's in the garage, it's a fact that most valet shops couldn't clean a car properly if they're life depended on it.
It's seems to be a mixture of staff not being given enough time to do the job well and not caring enough to do so either, classis example of "it's just a car".

Yes it is most probably the automatic was that has caused the damage. My Sport was ruined by a dealer wash and he had to settle a £1000 bill to correct it. Dealers have no idea how to properly maintain a cars paint and the more prestige the car the worse it is prepared. The big problem is they want it out quickly when most customers would be willing to spend a few extra pounds on a properly finished vehicle.
