Google says......

"It's not about the nitrogen. It's about reducing oxygen, water vapor and other gases.

By reducing the percentage of oxygen, water vapor and other gases in your tires from 22% to 7% or lower, your tires will maintain proper pressure longer than if you use “plain old air.” For example, with 95% nitrogen in your tires, they retain optimal pressure three to four times longer."

This is becoming very popular over here in the USA and I beleive it does off a better ride quality.

So can you buy Nitrogen gas bottles to keep at home should the pressure drop or have you got to find a garage to pump your tyres up Question

You just know you're going to have the problem when the garage is shut.......... Whistle TDV6 - gone

I looked into the whole Nitrogen thing and was left feeling it is a bit of a con - certainly won't do any harm but I think all the advantages claimed don't stand up to a whole lot of scrutiny:

F1 cars use them - and gain a few hundreths of a second, not really going to make any difference to you and I.

They use it in aeroplane tyres - plane tyres have to undergo massive temperature and pressure differences as well as extreme stress on landings. The small amount of moisture present in air-filled tyres could be an issue at altitude as it could lead to ice crystals developing in the tyres and other pressure- and temperature-related issues. Again, not a factor for a land-based vehicle.

They stay inflated for longer - people do claim this, but there's no scientific reason why they should from what I understand.

They reduce corrosion of the from within the tyre - Tyres get worn from the outside at a much faster rate! With no UV light damage occurring inside the tyre and the only aggressive agent in there being air, it's going to be decades before there's any measurable decay inside the tyre. By which time the outside of the tyre will be severely affected by exposure to light and the air around it, never mind the fact that you're probably going to wear your tyres away after 2-3 years anyway.

A couple of things to remember - air is 80% nitrogen anyway, so you've already got mostly nitrogen in your tyres. Also, deflating your tyres will leave about 10-20% of the air inside them, so then filling them with nitrogen will only give you about 95% nitrogen compared to the 80% you had in there in the first place.

Personally, I'm not convinced that you get anything for what you pay. Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.8::MG Montego Turbo::MGB GT::Rover Sterling::MGF::MG ZT 190+

I run my M3 on N2, cost me £1 a corner for initial inflation i have been back to have them checked and pressures have remained constant for 6 months.

Apparently for performance cars it is more reliable as there is less fluctuation in pressure due to heat etc. In a RRS i wouldn't imagine many benefits except for you should expect your tyre pressures to remain constant.

aka...reduces the expansion of the gas in your tire = better tread wear = longer life out of your tires. It also helps prevent the annoying TPMS sensor from going off as frequently as it does with air filled tires.

Mine are now filled with 100% Nitrogen (Kwik Fit)

I was advised that other than the more constant tyre pressures the gas was friendlier to the alloy wheel itself? RRS gone
