iPod or USB Memory Stick?

When I get my RRS I want my MP3 library to remain permanently in the car, so I'll have the option of either:

(a) buy a dedicated 16GB iPod Nano + the LR iPod cable, total cost = £163

(b) load up an old 16GB USB memory stick with all my MP3 files and plug it in, total cost = £0

Instinct tells me that the iPod solution will give a much better "user experience", but when I think about it I really can't see what it can offer above and beyond the USB option.

Can somebody enlighten my as to how and why using an iPod in my RRS is going to be £163 better than using a USB memory stick?

cant comment on what you get from a stick cos never tried it, but would recommend ipod. MY10 has full touch screen menu on screen, brill, also cos i have 16G iphone dont need dedicated ipod, phone plugs into iphone connection, plays my music, then phone connects on bluetooth, muting music and has full phone menu on screen. perfect = get an iphone not an ipod, or get an ipod not a stick Thumbs Up purple people eater

I've already got an iPhone and an iPod too, but I want something I can leave permanently in the car so I don't forget to take it in and out of the car every time.

However, as the iPod is just really a memory stick with a fancy user interface and from what I understand the LR system doesn't use this interface but uses its own instead, I can't see the advantage of an iPod over a memory stick. Is there one? Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.8::MG Montego Turbo::MGB GT::Rover Sterling::MGF::MG ZT 190+

I'm about to embark on an explanation that I know little about............................

On the one hand the memory stick is cheaper, and providing that the files are saved correctly then you can call them up by artist etc.

The main issue which was demonstrated to us at launch was the quality. Hopefully someone with a little more MP3 knowledge than I (perhaps Kaine) can explain the difference, however from memory it was something to do with bit-rates and I believe the memory stick was 4 and the ipod 16. You can tell that I am clutching at straws here!

Anyway, we listened to the same track via an ipod and then again via a USB stick and the difference was very noticable. The USB stick file was very grainy in comparison.

Hope this helps?

James Thumbs Up

Thanks James,

That would kind of make sense, as the memory stick has no audio processing hardware or software, so converting all the 1's and 0's would have to be done by the car, whereas the iPod has dedicated audio decoding hardware to do this - Based on what you've said I'm guessing that the output from the iPod's audio connection has already been processed by the iPod so all the car has to do is output it through the sound system.

I need to do a bit more research though to find out if the iPod output interface bypasses the iPod's audio decoder or not.

However, whatever I do find out, I think the key thing is you've said that the audio sounded better over the iPod, and at the end of the day that's the most important factor! Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.8::MG Montego Turbo::MGB GT::Rover Sterling::MGF::MG ZT 190+

Is this true?

I think he's basing that on the fact that the iPhone has been updated every summer so far, and most people are assuming that this year will be no different. There's been no word from Apple yet though as is normal for Apple, but even the active rumour mills have been quiet as to what this years expected upgrade will bring.

My guess is a new connection so we'll all have to buy another £25 cable from LR Wink Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.8::MG Montego Turbo::MGB GT::Rover Sterling::MGF::MG ZT 190+

Believe me, Apple are tighter than a duck's backside with information about what's coming out when. There's no way a lowly mobile phone salesman is going to be privy to any information that you or I aren't. Even the managers of Apple stores don't know what's coming until Apple make their public announcements at their keynote events.

Though I think everyone's going to be a bit surprised if there's no iPhone upgrade this summer! Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.8::MG Montego Turbo::MGB GT::Rover Sterling::MGF::MG ZT 190+
