Theft of RRS / How are they stolen?

Not to sound like I am asking a really stupid question here, but based on the BBC1 Thread about stolen RRS's, what is the way in which these vehicles are stolen?

I am aware that people stealing the actual keys to remove the vehicle is now very common.

BUT - if the keys are not available, how difficult is it to steal a RRS? Are the immobilisers easy to overcome? Common sense says that if a vehicle is completely out of the way and a determined criminal has many hours to try and steal it, then its stolen or towed away!

But - say for example your car is parked in a public car park, lots of people about - is it possible for the immobilisers to be beaten very quickly? In other words, can the security of my RRS be compromised in record breaking time (e.g. 10 minutes)?

Anyone?

Unfortunately the down-side of car security getting better is that now criminals will often try to get the key by simple violence rather than use any hi-tech vehicle theft tools, usually by one of 3 different ways: breaking into a house, using violence against someone about to get into their car, or carjacking. It's almost as if the more we protect our cars, the more at risk we place ourselves.

In many countries in Africa where trackers and remote immobilisers have become common, car thieves will often also abduct the driver so he doesn't have chance to call the police or activate the tracker/immobiliser. The victim usually gets dumped, hopefully uninjured, in the middle of no-where so it's going to take him hours before he can report the theft or take any action. Alfa Romeo Giulietta 1.8::MG Montego Turbo::MGB GT::Rover Sterling::MGF::MG ZT 190+

Don't be silly - in 10 minutes a pro will be having a chilled drink from your fridge long gone on his way to a desired destination.

... unless the RRS refuses to start due to a flat battery of course Laughing

I've had reports of a few Sports being stolen, but every single one has been with a key. Not aware of any instances where the security has been overcome.

This is a topic regularly discussed. Most of the time they are after your keys (it's happened to me personally but I persuaded then to go away). The problem is if they really want your car and you've hidden your keys then you could be putting yourself in danger.

Carjacking is definitely a must in some areas I try to avoid.

Yes - having had my RRS stolen with keys I wouldn't recommend hiding the keys too much as if they break into your house they wont want to leave with nothing. Luckily we were on holiday at the time but I have now purchased a very large baseball batt for when they come back. A friend has bought a powerful air pistol so i wouldn't want to be steeling keys from some houses i know!!

I thought about this last night - we live on a main road and RRS is always parked right outside my house.....I like seeing it there and good having it there to clean in the morning, but the doubts came into our mind after watching the programme....it's a tough call.....

I understand from a very good source that some of the scam charity clothes collection delivery people sell your post code, house number and car type by a text message and then the gangs turn up and take the car. Google street view is also useful!

Not sure about the baseball bat idea but its always handy to have a spray bottle of a bleach solution (cleaning kitchen work surfaces obviously) handy at home!

You are ok to use as much force as necessary to defend yourself against intruders, but go over the top and things get a big problem for you!

I'd happily go over the top every time if I had to, wouldn't give it a second thought....sorry but it's true. Tell me how many of us would buy stun guns if they were readily available....although maybe not a great idea as my mrs might use it on me if we had an argument Whistle

Daz I realise the law is an ass but if some scum come into my house and put my wife at risk they will suffer badly and i will worry about what happens to me after. Why should scum be protected as they are.
