Need new tyres soon HELP

Hi

28,000 miles on the Goodyear Wranglers that were fitted to my car from new. Good tyres and good mileage. They will need replacing soon. I have had a quote for £787.25 (inc VAT) for a new set of four.

I enquired about Hankooks - but I was told by the same (small tyre fitting company) that as my originals are Y-rated (and the Hankooks are only W-rated) that I shouldn't fit Hankooks as I may have insurance problems.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can cut this cost down from £787 as above ....... or does anyone have any further advice on the Hankooks and that speed rating? I've been mad for flipping years, absolutely years, over the edge for yonks.

No harm in speaking to forum sponsor AJS Tyres - I'm sure they will do you as best a deal as they can and would also be able to offer a second opinion on the advice you've already been given w.r.t speed rating Thumbs Up

This would be my argument if I had to produce one for an insurer.

If the Goodyears are 275/40x20 107Y, the "Y" speed rating is for a max continuous speed of 300kph (186mph).

The "107" load rating means the tyre can carry a max of 975kg but only up to 270kph (169mph) continuously. (Above that speed its load capacity reduces).
Therefore four tyres can carry 3900kg continuously at up to 169mph.

275/40x20 Hankooks are 106W rated. "W" means a max continuous speed of 270kph (169mph). A "106" load rating is 950kg up to 240kph (150mph), so four tyres can carry 3800kg continuously at 150mph.

A TdV6 has a Gross Vehicle Weight of 3070kg and a max speed of 193kph(120mph). The Hankooks are therefore well within their design capability.

I had the same problem and went to my local fitter and he recommended 4 general grabbers UHP, £130 a corner.
Found them to be great in the bad weather and very quiet.
Have tried the hankooks and seem very good but found them to be not as good in the snow.
hope this helps

Just installed Hankook Ventus rh206 on my sport. Did about 2 months of research. This is the best tire I have ever used and the reviews were all higher than everything else in this size 275/40/20 and the XL load rating. www.tires-easy.com. Paid $106 (us dollars) a piece. The W rating is 168 mph or 270 kph. They also handle great in rain & snow!! Good luck! mike murphy

I put the Hankooks on my TDV8 last November. Driven all through the UK winter and snow with no problem at all. They are quiet and I have had no issues with them.
Previously the car had Contis. After fitting the Hankooks it seem much smoother. However that could be due to having four perfectly balanced wheels rather than new rubber.
As none of us do side by side comparisons of the different tyres we put on our cars it cannot be said that the Hankook is better or worse than a Grabber or better or worse than a Conti.
I can say the Hankook is a perfectly OK tyre. Colleagues on the forum say the Grabber is perfectly OK too. There are others which are OK too.
Whichever you choose it will be a good choice.
