Only vulnerable part is the plastic compressor cover - you can get a guard though. If the off-roading is serious, you might want to spray some plast-kote over the sensors and other electrical bits that hang under the car. On pre 2010 versions, the transmission ecu that is behind the battery box on the passenger side can take in water and plasti-kote or similar will help there too.

If you are visiting a tyre shop make sure that they know how to jack the car up properly - one of the local tyre centres managed to destroy several D3 suspension compressors by putting the trolley jack pad in the wrong place.
