Dunni

I don't want to"dis" you but as an old man, successful in my career, with an RRS might I offer you a little advice?

Unfortunately, your generation has grown up with computers and using moble phones for texting and uses "text speak" when they write. This means that you cannot spell properly or, if you can, you don't check your work and read your posts before submitting them. Furthermore, equally not your fault, you have been taught poorly in school and not corrected for fear of making you feel bad.

I may seem old fashioned (I am still 2 years off my 50th birthday and still have all my own hair and teeth) but 2 things have always stood me in good stead in my varied and interesting aviation career. 1) being numerate and able to do mental calculations with relative ease (great when I was flying large helicopters) and 2) being able to write using correct grammar, punctuation and English.

Consequently, in my current job as a Regional Manager for a large aircraft manufacturer making civil and military products, I am usually the person selected to write letters to Government Ministers, Ambassadors and even Prime Ministers when the comany is involved in international military sales.

Feel free to dis me if you like but I assure you that being numerate and able to write cogent English will give you advantages over your peers when it comes to finding a job. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

BKHK - I also agree that correct spelling + punctuation goes a long way. Whilst I am not trying to take apart Dunni's posts there were some mistakes - but in fairness; I've made a few of those myself on interent forums. Thumbs Up

As a 'fairly' young guy myself (30) I admire anyone with ambition. Don't ever let anyone knock you for being ambitious. The best advice I can give you is to find a career with potential high earnings; but above all one which you 'enjoy' doing. I use the word 'enjoy' loosely so i'll be more specific - one which you can get passionate about.

The other piece of advice I'd give - is if you find something you are very good at + are passionate about; then go & set up your own business & do it yourself. Running your own business is one of the most demanding, stressful & at times dis-heartening not to mention lonely things a person can do. The reward & pride you feel for getting through all that makes it all worth while though and i'm not just talking about being able to buy material things. '10 Jaguar XKR Coupe 5.0L Supercharged.

Not trying to"dis" anyone here, I am just trying to offer the young man some advice. Thumbs Up

I agree that ambition is great, I still have it.

But in the future job market young guys like Dunni will need a differentiator from their peers and good numeracy and literacy would (from what I see of his generation) will make the difference between a high paying job and a medium paying one. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

BKHK - Again I agree with you.

I might also add that many of my peers have degrees in all types of fields - in my opinion a degree in common sense would also be a required element!! '10 Jaguar XKR Coupe 5.0L Supercharged.

Thanks for the advice guys, I do agree with most of you about my generation. Most of them are completely lost when it comes to education, although i am lucky enough to be blessed with a mother who is a teacher and a father that has an amazing mind when it comes to money.

Obviously, at times i write many things in 'text' form as its a lot quicker than typing long sentences with posh words, but when it comes down to it i believe i can construct sentences very well.

Thank you very much for the advice. Ill be sure to consider this when completing my education and looking for a job in the future!

Good advice indeed. Ambition is great and although a little older than BKHK I still have it and it drives me on. Agree with Sporty Spice Driver that in addition, common sense , inegrity and good manners need to be applied, in the absence of a formal degree such attributes have never let me down and after 25 years of climbing the corporate ladder am now a director of 2 companies and enjoying working life more than ever, and I have the RRS that I always dreamed of when driving my 1.6 Mondeo company car

good luck Dunni, keep dreaming purple people eater

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

Dunni as one of the "sagalouts"(only just over 50...............) here you should aspire to your RRS - in 1979 I drove one of the first 3 door Range Rovers delivered to Dubai out of the hold of the ship I was training on as a cadet on. I vowed that one day I would own a Range Rover (of the FFRR type). Took me 28 years to get there, and every time I got to within it being affordable LR jacked the price up so I had to wait a bit longer. In 2003 I achieved my goal, was not disappointed even though all I could afford was a "poverty" spec FFRR TD6 SE, BUT it was a new FFRR and I was pleased to have achieved my goal with a little additional money help from the bank manager. SO don't expect to buy your dream car with your first pay packet, it will feel even better if you have had to wait to be able to buy it! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Yes, Ive always had the mentality that when you work hard for something and then you go out to buy what you wanted, you appreciate it alot more than someone who has just bought the item because its the latest trend etc. You think to yourself ive waited all this time to get this and finally ive purchased it, you are more likely to look after it and appreciate it alot more Smile "The two most powerful warriors are patience and time"
