Category D is a damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road. Kev

Depends what ur plans are ? If you intend to keep it....why not ! For resell you have to declare it and resell would be poorer. Kev

You should be paying at least 10% less than retail for a cat D, but beware when coming to sell it on !

If its an old Ford Mondeo, then dont worry about it - but the better the car the more problems you will have selling it on, unless of course you discount it (but it was cheap in the 1st place) Big Cry

So as previously stated, if its cheap enough and you want to keep it, then fine , but for resale its not worth it. Also if you do intend buying one - at the very least check the chassis alignment, as very often they are just repaired with no proper jig work. Also get pics of the damage prior to the repair - if they arent available - avoid !

general rule of thumb is 25% under book price in my experience, 10% on a 30k car is 3k id be dammed if i was buying a cat d at 10% disocunt u get more than that on a new car.

Ive sold on a few cat d's over the years they do take time to shift but like everything it will sell if its cheap enough.

BMW M Sport? 1, 3, 5, series? most of these are desirable cars and would do ok in resale id say. Best cars ive found are the newest model (for example e90 3 series) and the older the year on that model the better (ie 05/06) u will always find someone who cant quite afford a good example and will pip for the cat d.

Pm me the details and let u know if its a decent deal or not, i presume it is repaired?

There's an old saying .....

If It sounds too good to be true - then it probably is.

But I understand that you will have to look at this beastie, so I would advise asking for pics of the accident damage, if it was minor damage then they will fall over themselves to prove it, but if nothings forthcoming then it might have had a serious clout. Check to see if it looks straight from a distance - i.e stand a good 20' away from the car crouched and see if the body and wheels line up. Then suggest they get an HPI inspection - this is like a super dooper MOT, but they crawl over it with a fine tooth comb, any inconsistency in the repair or twist in the chassis will show up. See how they react to that. Or alternatively pay your local main agent BMW dealer to inspect it - its worth spending (losing £250) to find out what youre getting into.

Also see what history it has - if it has none, then its been clocked or they dont want you to find out - so walk, there's plenty of good un's out there, so just be patient.

Good luck Thumbs Up

An old trick was to strip the damaged panels so diminish the extent of the damage or even take pics half was through the repair to make it appear as if it was a light accident so pics will prove very little IMO.

Check all the main structural points, chassis legs, boot floor, windscreen and door shuts etc if its over 3yrs old it will in most cases require a vic check, HPI is a must as mentioned.

Its a billion pound business accident damage cars, if cat d and c werent sellable cars the insurance companies would bother with the classification and sale of these cars so dont be put off, u o need to know what u are doing or at least have someone to assist you who does
