Brake disc - thickness when new?

Anyone know what thickness a new set of original discs start at? And then of course at what thickness they should be replaced? I have no idea when they were last done and need to change pads, so thinking of doing it all at once.

Cheers.

This is turning into a major DIY service - getting a little too confident maybe Razz

Unless your discs have been skimmed / dressed the level of 'step' should give you an idea of wear from new to current. You'll have a lip around the outer / inner edge where the pad has worn the face down - the outer edge sometimes corrodes away but the inner edge is more resilient. This tell tale sign should help a little ....

Post pics if you need to for further clarification Thumbs Up

... and although also down to driving style the mileage can suggest when the discs ought to be done....

IIRC there is a detailed description for changing them somewhere on DISCO3.CO.UK. There is also a photo article on how to change the rears (on a Disco which is the same) in Feb 2010 Land Rover Enthusiast magazine P122.

Aha, so when new there is absolutely no step or 'rim' edge? This is purey created by the wear?

Will have a look in the morning and take a photo.

Cheers

Sorry MAW, another brake post for your tally Yawn

Bob do you have (or could you) scan that article? It would be really useful, considering the risks with the EPB. I have read quite a bit about placing the EPB in 'service' mode and removing the fuse, but all reading is good, especially with such a sensitive thing and potencial high repair cost. Thumbs Up

Have found enough info to sort front end, but the EPB concerns me. I'm happy with locking in into service mode and removing power etc. My big concern is this EXACT 8 clicks on the adjuster to release the shoes in order to get the disc / drum off and then making sure you crank the EXACT 8 clicks back. This sounds critical and difficult to do through the tiny adjustment hole. Will the disc / drum not come off without releasing the shoes? If the EPB is in service mode, surely the shoes are away from the drum? Have I misunderstood? MAW maybe? or Tim!

From what I understand, if you want to change the rear discs you need to 'lock off' the EPB to stop it engaging. The EPB uses the 'drum' on the backside of the disc to push brake shoes against. (Correct me if I have got this all wrong!).

Therefore, if I want to remove the disc, I am forced to remove the drum also.

See Disco3 thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic25409.html

I hoped that after locking off the EPB I could just slide of the disc / drum and replace with no messing with the EPB adjustment - the thread appears to say otherwise Confused

Am I making it as clear as mud?

MAW....help Thumbs Up

Ah - OK. I wondered why you were getting involved with the EPB when changing brakes - you are changing discs are you. you definately need to?

Maybe I can go one more set of pads, but I need to go and check the rim step as you suggested.

All I looked at before was the pads and I cannot see any (well maybe a mm or so) of friction material left on them. (although no warning light? maybe sensor not re-fitted at some stage - I'll see that later). There is no nasty noises so there must be something left on them.

Thought whilst I was there it could be nice to replace both to bed them in together.

So following the Disco3 guide, after re-fitting discs you completely let the EPB shoes out, wind back to point of no binding and then a further 8 clicks - all very fiddly Rolling Eyes

A mm sounds low Shocked IIRC the sensor is on the rear left and front right - be worth checking the sensor is in place IIRC if it hadn't been fitted the signal line would be open circuit anyway illuminating the warning light
