Hello, I am a new member on this forum but a long time LRA (Land Rover Addict) and member of another forum. My present ride is a 2003 L322 HSE.

We are moving to Spain this summer and I am thinking about getting a new RRS . Have not previously lived in Spain and so doing some research.

I read on the web that automobiles in Spain don't depreciate as rapidly as they do in some other places, especially here in North America.

Can anyone give me information about real world depreciation of a RRS (Diesel, not petrol) in Spain?

In general would you expect a BMW X5 or a Mercedes ML 350 or an Audi to depreciate at about the same rate, over a period of say three years, or would some of these brands hold their value more or less compared to the RRS?

Does anybody have a link to something giving used car prices in Spain?

Any RRS owners on this forum from Spain who might have other advice for me?

Moved myself to Spain 2 years ago and bought an RRS 2.7 TDV6 just last august.

Got a very good deal, thanks to the 2 first mentioned links, which i used for my search.

The prices in the dealers are creazy, but the privat market offers now a lot of possibilities.

Almost all spanish car owners, buy their cars here with bank loans.

For this reason and in combination with the woldwide financial crises, which is very very deep here in spain,
this offers a lot of very good deals in the higher car price range.

You can also get one in germany and import her via an not so difficult procedure to spain.
These cars are normaly in much cleaner shape. Since the germans loooooove their cars!

one or two words of warning. If buying a used car privately in Spain, you need to pay a transfer of ownership tax to the government. This is also set by the government and can be very expensive. The process of buying and registering a used car is a nightmare and you need a fiscal representative to do this (seriously, I'm not kidding). Also, any debts that the previous owners has incurred such as speeding fines, parking fines stay with the car - not the previous owner. If there is outstanding finance on the car, this is registered against the car on a central government register. Worse still is the car can be used to settle debts of the previous owners such as income tax.
I bought a used VW Golf on Spanish plates for using at my place in the sun. People are right in their observations that depreciation in Spain on cars is slow. My 2003 Golf cost me £5,000 (5,500 euros). The same car at a dealer would have been 7 or 8k euros. In the UK, the same car on right hand drive would have been £3k. However, the tax to transfer the car into my name was 500 euros (for a 6 year old car!). This price is set by the government. To investigate the cars history and make sure no HP or debt and fines outstanding was 70 euros. To actually transfer ownership took 3 visits to separate government offices by my Gestoria which cost me another 300 euros (ish). Not straightforward at all. The bureaucracy is probably why cars depreciate so slowly as people are reluctant to change their cars very often due to the complexity of their system. Another thing to watch out for is the scammers and the corrupt. Don't put your trust in a third party agent that you don't know.
