not so funny, mate of mine took his car in for various problems, dealer found a nest of 7 or more mice living behind his boot lining purple people eater

It could be a problem with a multi cable connector behind the battery. Usually corrosion, causing poor connections, but I know of one chap who actually had a small fire in this area, on a D3 I'd suggest taking the battery out and having a look at this (but make sure car is asleep first... ie,switch off and wait for red park brake light to go 'off,' before disconnecting battery).
