tow bar - factory or dealer fit

I'm about to order a new RRS 3.0 HSE but the tow bar prices seem really high. Fatcory fit is £440 but dealer fit around £250 more ! Is there a difference in what they fit ? Also, in my past experience, factory fit options have generally been more reliable and better fitted than dealer fit options ?

Advice gratefully received !

Phil

Back on topic................

The dealer fit is the same as factory fit, however the additional cost is down to the labour to fit the electrics. Obviously on the production line they simply add it on as the vehicles goes by (perhaps I'm making that sound too simple Embarassed ) however to fit at the dealership the vehicles back end needs to be stripped down and it needs to be programmed (time = money).

Ideally factory fit is cheaper, however there won't be many dealerships adding them to stock orders (especially in London!) Whistle

Most importantly - Any accessories fitted to the vehicle when new are covered by the full 3 year warranty, as opposed to just 1 year if fitted after.

If it is price that is the concern the point was that you can get the kit of fleabay and DIY fit quite quickly, the towbar plugs in so it doesn't matter who puts that on, no dealer would be able to refuse to deal with a LR stamped towbar and LR electrics kit under warranty as they would not know where it was from - you are entitled to fit the kits or they wouldn't sell them Confused

Phil - agree on factory fit over dealer fit for most items but this is one where it doesn't matter - if you want to DIY you'll have gained a couple of free tank fulls of fuel Laughing

Electrics approx £80
Towbar up to around £150 on fleabay
30 mins to fit

Phil,

If you want to take the advice of forum members then we can take the tow bar and/or elecs out of the order and reduce the price accordingly. Would just need to know over next couple of weeks.

Actual bar is not an issue, however you would need to be a keen DIY'er to fit the elecs then you'd need to visit a dealer to have it configured (I think).

If I remember right, the configuration work disables the rear fogs whilst the towbar is attached, so those who have fitted themselves will not get that capability (I guess you decide whether that's an issue for you or not).

Personally, I wouldn't ever attempt that sort of thing myself and would happily pay for the factory fit. Is it worth saving the relatively small amount of money to get less warranty and peace of mind?
